Since EL is probably dead at this point, I have switched back to Game EX...however it has been a little painful.(no offense)

It is much better than it was last time I tried, however I did have some trouble.

The icons for 98u1 dont seem to work properly, several icons are wrong (such as zombie raid having nagano 98's icon, and many more misplaced icons). Also the performance seems to have dropped dramatically. (I have a 3.2 ghz machine with a gig of ram and a good Geforce card)...The animations are quite a bit slower, and the whole thing tanks on my system. I went into the tweaks and performance, turned alot of things down, changed to less taxing theme, but it did not help much. I tried just about every tweak suggested, I still get horrible performance. Tom, perhaps you can help? (you were very helpful in the past)

A few of the things I requested in the past were added, however a few things I have not checked yet (such as resizeable gamelist text). One thing I noticed that hadnt been added was the ability to type a game name, (such as S-T-R-E taking you to streaking) it will still take you to the first game that begins with s, than t, than r, etc.

Also, it appears that the CRASHTEST type screen shots are not yet supported. (we spoke about thisbefore and I seem to confuse you)

I love the frontend, esp how it handles cab cpanel pics etc, KEEP UP THE GOOD work, and I hope you can help me.

thanks

i think the ICOns may be because they are cached. If you try now its probably OK.

I am concerned about the performance you talk about though. It really should fly on your system.

If anything performance should be a little better since last time you were here.

Can you tell me what settings you have under Tweaks/Performance?

It may well be its your graphics driver. I know someone talked about the latest geforce drivers having issues before.

Let me know.

Welcome back.

Hi, I just tried running GameEx on my old test system PII 800Mhz, and it is indeed running very slow. Where before the GUI was full speed. Ill look into this.

How much memory do you have in your system?

I would *love* for that to be added to GameEx. I'm very spoiled by Windows Explorer, and I'm always typing "MSP" to find Ms. Pacman and getting the 'P''s instead. :)

awesome.. like zSNES' GUI :)

edit:

but will you have a line of characters showing what you've typed and allowing backspace to clear each char.. probably would need someting like that.

No probably not. I dont know many apps with this functionality that do that.

In regard to performance please try the laster version 4.62.

I take it your ICONS were re-cached and are OK now?

Tom, you were right about part of the problem, however I am not sure where to continue.

I went so far as to totally reinstall windows. Before I reinstalled the current official Geforce drivers, Game EX was fine (45-60 FPS) but as soon as I installed them and then restarted, back to the same problems. Also, before the driver install the icons were fine, but yet, right after its back to Golden Tee Classic's icon showing on King of Fighters 94, etc.

I hope this helps you isolate the problem a bit more.

Just to answer your earlier question, I have a Geforce FX 5200 and a gig of ram, so I think I should be good.

If its the drivers, not much I can do sorry.

Youre kidding me, well can you at least recommend some I can use in place of the current ones (whichever you use, I guess)

I did a little search, seems Geforce drivers since about the 69 versions have all had trouble. I am going to try drivers (66.93) from last November...I just wish there was a better way to solve this at the expense of most my other games.

Damn Geforce.

The latest drivers must have issues with DirectDraw. Hopefully they will eventually resolve the issues. Although as the majority of software uses Direct3D its probably not high priority for the lazy bstards. I just wonder if some emus are affected too. A lot of them still use DirectDraw, including MAME.

Anyone else have thoughts on the topic of GeForce drivers?

I am an ATI man myself. Although they screwed with things lately, so that I cant create custom powerstrip resolutions on my MCE PC. So I just use the drivers from Windows Update instead. Maybe thats a safer bet for Geforce too?

ATI custom res seems to be working again in 5.6 (haven't tried 5.7 yet).

I thought DirectDraw was part of Direct3D in DX9+?

i was thinking that for gameex and mame you may be able to use

advancemame, it has a built in graphic driver i think, so that you

can use an arcade monitor, running the graphic's card with that may be better

at least for the gameplay anyway.

just a thought!

I think its still legacy. You might be thinking of 2D graphics with Direct3D.

TOm, backdating to the old drivers worked like a charm. Game EX is faster than it has ever been, smooth as butter. San Andreas seems to play better also :P

Now if I could get you to add the custom picture fields, so Crashtest's screenshots can fully be supported. But I will wait till he starts making screenshot packs again before I bother you with that yet :P

Tom, one thing that I thought would be neat is if M1 could someone be added into Game EX.

I also have a 5200 in my mame machine. I found that the 71.89 drivers work great. Anything newer ends up having random issues with things. With the newest drvers, everything else was fine except for video... which ran in 16bit colors! :( Totally bizarre.

Also, Karasu, what is this special screenshot thingy you're talking about? I don't remember reading that thread.

Edit: Nevermind, I found it. I haven't used Crashtest's screens so I think I'll run along and find a pack and see what this is all about.

there are lots of stories about newer nVidia drivers not being good for old hardware. the "unified" thing is a bit.. misleading imho.

I haven't been able to go beyond the 67.03 driver with my FX5700. Newer versions lock up when playing video in MCE (especially over the network). The computer continues to function, but the card itself remains frozen on the video image until I restart the machine.

Its funny because I started using NVidia to get away from ATI driver problems, and now it's the same thing all over again.
