a friend of mine has ambition to move to the united kingdom after he saves up enough money. he wants to live in ireland or scotland. basically he's fed up with the U.S. how would the people take to him? would it be worth it? or would it be a waste of money? the thing is he asked me to go, and i'm stupid and will take a risk like that. just thought i'd do some research first.

I'm from Northern Ireland, it's not a bad spot it's alot more laid back than mainland UK, I certainly like Northern Ireland more than the Republic of Ireland... I love Scotland too though, I've had some great time in Glasgow... would you not be better comming for a holiday before diving straight in :)

i don't know, i'm kind of in it for the adventure. are there lots of things to do out there? do the people take kindly to strangers? my main concern is being lonely and not making friends.

Depends on you personality. If you just hang round home it would be hard to meet people.

Take up a sport, thats a good way to find people of similar interests.

Not sure what the UK is like tho I've never been there, Im from little old New Zealand!

But I do have heaps of mates there on an OE

New Zealand is a great peacefull place to live, with friendly people.

Its generally a nice country, most people are friendly.

Its certainly not a cheap place to live though, very expensive. one of the most expensive in Europe. Altough it depends on what part of the country.

The economy is doing well, shouldnt have a problem getting work etc.

Yeah, so generally its a great place to live.

I had the opporunity to move my life over to the states (philadelphi), with a great opportunity, but I decided to stay in the UK.

Like I said though not cheap.

The thing that bugs (inteligent) people most about imigration here (and theres MASSIVE imigration), is when folks dont integrate, but being American and speaking the lingo etc, should have no problem.

My main concern is being lonely and not making friends.

I think a lot of people have that concern, wherever you were to go.

I would says though, there is a hell of a lot of ways to intereact with folks here, from finding a local pub, to joining a skydiving club :)

Also, generally people are quite sociable here, so you would probably make a lot of friends just by getting a job.

thank you this is all great information that will be put to use. is there any part of the united kingdom one would not want to live?

We have that problem here in the states too. We used to be a melting pot of different nationalities but now the politically correct movement has caused us to "value" cultural diversity. We have politicians fighting over illegal imigration saying we should give aliens drivers licenses and health benifits even though they are illegal just to satisfy their voting base that wants cheap labor. It's really tearing our nation apart and is a lot bigger deal than most people give credit. Katuuz I think living abroad for a while is a wonderful idea, I would have to agree with the earlier post however that you might want to spend a week or two their before making a big decision like that.

nicely put jt. and i am looking into spending a week outside of london starting the first weekend of the new year. (jan 5.) as you can tell i'm in no particular rush, i'm taking it slow and hoarding money. i've got about $3,000 USD saved so far for the actual move (if it takes place) and i've started a vacation fund to go check things out. i don't know what it is about america (the east coast anyways) but i'm not liking the way things work around here. we just had world news in a town called cheshire, CT.. a pair of guys broke into a families house, and killed the wife, and 2 daughters and leaving the father/husband for dead even though he is still alive. they've had a breaking and entering rap sheet since they were 17, and our government puts a house arrest bracelet on martha steward for cashing in on a stock... how much sense does that make? that isn't the particular reason i'm leaving, but it's a good example of how our government is run by a bunch of "winners". i'm not racist one bit, but all of the people from poverty struck countries are coming here and getting on welfare and section 8 and our taxes are going through the roof. don't get me wrong a lot of them go about it the right way and get legalized citizenship and work hard, but a whole lot of them just come and reap the benefits and it's really spinning out of control.

--by the way (excuse me for the rant) i'm a licensed barber in the USA, how is that line of work over seas? are barbers in demand? does everyone usually go to a unisex salon? what types of hair cuts are popular? i know over here the kids are growing out their hair (which sucks for me) and mostly all my clients are older men. thanks again guys hopefully someday soon i'll be posting about life in GB :)

Where I leave there are like probably 25 hair saloons/barbers in a 5 mile radius. Lots of competition, and hairdresseres are generally poorly paid, and tipping is much less here. Once youve paid for the flight and exchanged currency, $3500 dollars will probably last you about a month if your renting on the outskirts of london and live really cheaply. Your cant seriously consider moving over here on that. Probably enough for the vacation. Are you serious about this?

i'm dead serious about this. no, i said i have $3,000 USD saved up so far. i'll vacation there first (i'm not moving there for about a year or more when the time's right). barbering is my only licensed skill, and it'd be nice to cut hair once i get there. what are the prices for a haircut roughly? can i barber and survive on the wages? do you think people would shy away from an american hair cutter? i plan to have at least 10,000 USD for the move.

For starters dont be worried how people will take to you as an American, its so multi cultural here. People will most likely be interested in you I would think.

I have someone come round to me and cut my hair, just a simple buzz cut/crop, shaved grade 2. It costs me £10 and I give her a pound tip.

Considering she drives over, stops for coffee, and tidys up a little, I dont think that is a lot at all.

that's not bad, we get $12 in my town, so i'd imagine i'd only charge about 6 pounds over your way seeing as a pound is roughly $2.03 USD. if i could get a few more, fine but i'm not coming there to try and make a zillion pounds, i just would like to get out of the US for a while and be financially comfortable.. who knows i may even apply for a different job all together, but i just see it as if i'm trained in a field, why not try that first. but tom for the busy guy you are i do appreciate all the feedback - especially with this thread being totally off gameex topic.
