MAME and joystick IDs

Does anyone know how to get mame to reconize joystick ID that are set from external programs.

I have 4 kinds of joysticks for example.

Windows always sets joy4 as ID1 And mame sees it as Joy1. Which would be correct.

Using any of the various joystick ID changing utilities I can set Joy4 to have ID4, but mame still sees it as Joy1.

All the other emus seem to see it as the corrected ID4 and set the controls as Joy4.

Mame doesn't see it like that it just sees joypad 1-4. I would use xpadder and configure the joypad to use mame default keys(keyboard) for each player. This way you can always have a particular joystick for a specific player.

For each game pad you have you configure a profile with xpadder. Xpadder uses the joystick ID.

So If you have a 8 button logitec you use for p1. configure it to the same keys as mame uses for p1 save the profile.

Same for pad 2 and so fourth
