jesus man, this is...

awesome actually.

i'll be updating twice today.

btw is it supposed to be safe to update without backing up & restoring your config? is there an install for upgrade option i'm missing? i only started at ver 4.54 so i'm not totally used to the procedure yet - it seemed to reset some of my config.

edit: strangely the download dissapeared when i was halfway through downloading. i wonder if that means you're upping another new version.

edit2: and its back :)

Does it all for you automatically, and nobodies had an issue yet.

EDIT: Yes I just upped. Should be OK now. I left a few settings turned on in the config which would throw off newbies so I did a rebuild.

i thought it reset some of my config, but probably i just shouldn't install software while drunk/tired. thanks!

As I said before, it will only reset missing settings.

If you went into the ini and removed the Also Launch setting completely for example. GameEx would treat this as empty, but the install would see its missing and put it back with whatever the default value is. I expect thats what happened.

nah i just saw same problem, after this upgrade

LaunchBefore=C:\launchbefore.bat

LaunchAfter=pause

were added back to my zSNES config.

i left them cleared but not deleted.

LaunchBefore=

LaunchAfter=

edit: sorry is that what you meant should happen? can you make the installer not do this, or should i comment the lines out completely with # ? or some other way to show that i mean it to be not filled in. is there a null character i should be using?

and small observation about installer:

"finishing install" takes a long time.

dunno if it's just my system, no biggie.

only tried once but speed to return to GameEX seems wonderful, thank you!

The upgrade util does not do that. You must have a messed up ini file with duplicate sections or something.

i think the issue is this:

user must not indent lines with tab. spaces are ok.

(you have indented most of the zSNES entry one tab stop width using spaces).

sorry about that.. was just trying to make it look neater.

another thing learnt!

Tim,

I like the changes you have made. Exiting out of an emulator is much smoother than before. I noticed that Media Center focuses correctly now. GameEx's wife friendly rating just went through the roof :)

The only bug I can report is how the emulator exits if the green button is pressed. I'm sure this has been reported before, if not I will give more information on the error I get there.

It just seems to want to start loading MCE without exiting the emulator completely. Can I suggest either disabling the button while an emulator is launched, or having it act like the back button currently does?

I have the self control not to push the green button during gameplay, but I have doubts that my wife will ;) She uses that button to exit everything to get back to the MCE main menu... gonna be a hard habit to break.

Aha, that must be it, well spotted.

LOL! Here I was all excited because Tom got "The green button" to work smoothly from within GameEx. What did the other half do last night? Pressed the green button while MAME was in a random game in attract mode!! Argh!

So yeah, if Tom can add some additional checks to see if ehshell.exe starts while waiting for an emulator to exit, kill it off, then exit gracefully, that would be great. If you do implement this, can you make it optional when running emulators? I have some pretty complex "kill the running app" rules in my own "key monitor" program, so it'd probably be better if I handled that situation myself when using my own monitor program.

Perhaps I should modify the original setting, and add one for each emulator. Which would be 'Check for particular process and Exit' That way it would be more flexible and perhaps work with the other HTPC software?

I must say though, I am not too motivated, as my green button on my remote has only ever worked when within MCE :(

No worries, this is no longer an issue, the upgrade app now strips out the tabs. Will be in next release.

Tom,

I removed an old version of GameEX and then reinstalled the latest, but I'm getting a strange problem...it cant see MAME.

I have used the easy config and teh one within GameEX but the option to play MAME stuff just isnt appearing.

How do I resolve?

Hi,

The log is your friend. It tells you why GameEx disabled MAME usage.

Also, up until the last build, I left AdvanceMAME turned on, which did this. Go into Advanced MAME settings, and turn it off.

Cheers,

Tom

It was Advanced MAME that was causing the problem.

maybe take care of that next release? It certainly gave me a head scratcher

Left GameEx 4.58 running, (MAME demos presumably), came back and saw this:

not sure if its repeatable yet, will restart

GameEx.exe Common Languate Runtime  Debugging Services

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled

Process id=0x5ec (1516), Thread id=0x5f0 (1520)

never seen this before. any ideas?

unrelated Q, is there an easy way to see which version of GameEx you're running?

Its the error thats displayed whenever a .net app has an unhandled exception. It must be the attract mode where it occured, as exceptions everywhere else are handled. Its not a 4.58 issue, and not code has changed there for a whie. Maybe MAME crashed or something, was it still running when you came back?

It was actually taken care of in 4.58.

you are also stripping out blank lines, perhaps this is a bit much? :) (Sorry to be so picky)

that crash i haven't seen again, i'll keep an eye out for it.

thanks

I dont see that here.

The format of GameEx.ini is actually competely changed during upgrade to the default one I supply in the install. This is necessary to ensure any comments I add for new settings are in the file, which I stopped doing so detailed ones anyway after I made the config app avaialble. Anyway, people really should be using the configuration app to make changes. I cant really support issues really unless there done with the config app.
