Anyone have a fast way of starting up gameex from system boot?

Right now, i have Gameex setup to boot when the computer is turned on. The way i did this is by placing the gameex.exe file in the windows startup folder. This works fine, the only thing i dont like is it takes about 10-15 seconds after windows has booted to launch.

I tried instant sheller but it pretty much messed up my computer somehow and i had to reformat. I'm not comfortable using it anymore.

Is there any other way to make gameex bootup faster when starting the computer?

Go in registry and change the shell from explorer.exe to the gameex.exe along with full path c:\program files\gameex\gameex.exe or what ever.

export the reg key first before you chage it so you can go back.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

"Shell"="Explorer.exe"

Yep. First export the original regkey so in case you want to revert back you can.

so i tried this and it didnt work. Gameex tries to start up and simply crashes with an error screen, an error about direct draw.

Well sounds to me like gameex is loading too fast now. Even before your video drivers. does your video driver have a program that runs in tray? How many other apps load during startup?

check MSCONFIG

I bet u a dollar if you wait a few secs after gameex crashes and CTRL+ALT+DEL click file RUN and run c:\program files\gameex\gameex.exe gameex it wont crash. you can also run EXPLORER.exe at this point to get your start bar back.

my video driver doesnt have a tray icon. i have no apps that load except for the few ones you can't turn off. It works by putting the gameex.exe in the start menu folder but my only problem is it takes so long for it to actually start up.. about 30 seconds once the computer is booted up before it initializes into gameex.

I'm not sure what happened to your machine before, but all instant sheller does is make the same registry changes that have been suggested. Off the top of my head, IS can change the shell (Explorer -> GameEx), change the logon image (WinXP -> Whatever logo you want), make changes only for the current user or all users, and a couple other things.

If things aren't as you want, you can login via safe mode (hit F8 during initial bootup to Windows), or remotely with some other account (if you set it to automatically login), or use ctl-alt-del to start explorer. Then you can start instant sheller again and disable all changes for the next boot and everything will be as it was.

Again, all changes that IS is making are reversible and could be performed by the user in a few more steps via registry and file modification. Tom's IS is just quicker and less prone to error.

Now, if you choose to do things manually, there is a link to an arcadecontrols forum thread about this exact topic floating around somewhere. It might be easiest to just search their forums directly, though. There is an EXTENSIVE list of things that can be done to turn your pc into as close to a cab as is possible!

well i've gotten down pretty good.. changed the win xp boot screen, then it boots up with no windows messages or anything to the desktop for about 10 seconds, which i have the task bar hidden and moved to the top of the screen, with a mame desktop background.. then after staring at the desktop for about 10 second gameex loads.
