I'm having a couple of strange problems with GameEx.

OS: Windows Media Center Edition

GameEx: Current Version

Problem 1:

I have all of the game snap/video crap configured properly. Right file names, right paths, etc. Is there something I need to do in order to get them to play? They load up, and play about a second of the audio and will show the first frame. If I scroll down the list quickly, I can hear the music playing from the video, but when I stop on a game, the same thing happens (the video plays a second of the music and shows the first frame) I would think if the videos weren't playing at all this would be a codec problem, but I don't think this is the case. Any suggestions? Is there an option that says 'don't automatically play videos' or something like that? Thanks!

Problem 2:

When I play a Nintendo 64 game with Project64 1.6, when I exit the game, GameEx errors and shuts down. This does not happen with any other emulator... Any suggestions?

PS: Love the software!

Thanks in advance! :D

**** EDIT ****

The issue was that I hadn't installed the FDShow codec. Very strange, but now it works. I'm still wondering about the Project 64 thing though, has anyone else experienced this?

I've come to realize myself tonight, that GameEx definitely has issues when trying to play Video Snaps. In fact, after doing extensive testing with and without these . AVI videos, the program simply functions better (and without crashing) if you disable these Movie Snaps all-together. Again, I can't speak for everyone, but this happened to be the culprit of my woes this past week. Here's another topic regarding this issue...

Have you got ffdshow installed? Did you follow these directions?

FFDShow

FFDShow is a codec pack that provides codecs for video and audio playback in GameEx. It is recommended that you use this codec pack because it has been verified compatible with GameEx.

If you experience video problems, it is recommended that you uninstall all other codec packs including XVid, DivX etc. and install FFDShow from here.

Headkaze and Tom posted some stuff on ffdshow a while back in this thread. In fact if you search the forum for ffdshow you will likely come up with several hits on different video problems and how people fixed them. You are not the only one who has had problems with vids and video snaps, but it is a problem that usually comes back to ffdshow or other video codec issues. Another thing you might look at is if you have WMP 11 installed, as I didn't, and it caused a problem for me. Hope this helps you.

Hmm, thanks for the heads-up... I was naturally unaware of this situation. I suppose getting rid of DivX codecs (and possibly others) and installing this FFDShow pack might just do the trick. All I can do is experiment and see what happens. By the way, are you trying to say that Windows Media Player 11 is a good, or bad thing? Well, if all else fails, I'll simply stick with regular Snaps - since it's not too much of a loss.

Thanks again for your help.

I really don't remember what it was exactly but Tom or maybe it was Headkaze suggested that I download WMP 11 and my problem went away. I believe it was some AVIs that were encoded with a new program that wouldn't work until I downloaded WMP 11. I guess WMP 11 has a new codec that is slightly different than the old one for AVIs. Now that I think of it check out this thread and scroll down and you will see the problem I was having. Not nessessarily the same thing you are experiencing but nonetheless, you can never be too sure when it comes to these codecs, especially when you don't know how the vids in question are encoded.

I've heard you shouldn't use the latest "daily build" of ffdshow. Try an older version or download the one Headkaze suggests in the post I mentioned earlier.

I've also got GameEx working using the K-Lite codec pack, you can follow my post in this thread. It also has a registry fix for the official DivX so the screen doesn't go black when attempting to play a DivX video.
