Try Google, but for your info theres two ways of doing it, theres one way which involves hacking windows which can cause problems, or doing it the way Microsoft allows you to do it by modifying boot.ini.

it appears to have worked with a sonic startup (quite cool)

Personally I'd go the Tom Spears way. He's a heck of a programmer and I'd trust InstantSheller over those other guys. The boot screen is normally embedded in with ntldr which is the boot image for XP. Get that file offset wrong and you won't be able to boot. It is a simple fix if you do screw it up, but it still sucks.
