- GameEx 4.51

  • Includes new theme - Default - GameEx
  • Added MAWS Hall of fame News Feed

30th June 2005
- GameEx 4.50

  • Fairly good update this.
  • GameEx now features an internet news
reader, with support for RSS 1 and 2 feeds. Sample feeds are
    included with the install.
  • Features a clean display of news,
caching of feeds, and availability to view the source of
news items within the GX front end as a web page.
  • GameEx can now be used as a standalone
DVD player, by launching with the command  line option
-DVD. When using this option, GameEx will load without any
intro screens or sounds, and immediately play the currently
inserted DVD, with all available DVD and GameEx navigation
features. The player exits appropriately when called to
    .
  • By default GameEx will now exit and MCE
will load correctly when the green button is pressed on the
MCE remote, or when MCE is loaded from a shortcut key, or
    other remote.
  • Games list for emulators are now cached
    after the first load
    of the list.
This should greatly improve accessing speed of the list when
ROMS are on a network/remote, and also improving navigation
    speed within GameEx.
  • Picture slide shows now feature the
option for very cool MCE stylie transitions. Requires a good
    CPU and video card though.
  • The time can now be shown in 24 hour
    format.

I really like GameEX, but seem to be having problems getting other emulators to run. I have checked the posts on PinMAME, because I seem to be having the same problems as everyone else, but can't seem to get it to run. I was messing around with another front end called Maximus Arcade and I thought they had a neat feature that might make all this easier. In order to set up an emulator, all you have to do is locate the execute and then the front end will pull all the folders to the right spots. It appears that you encourage full customization, and I really like that (and love this front end), but maybe that feature would make it a little easier for us hacks to get started on other emulators. Thanks for your hard work and time!!!

You make a very good point. I've actually been thinking about writing a configuration wizard app for GameEx and replacing the Basic Config application with it. Either that or extending the Basic Config application.

I like the idea of a wizard. I normally use just the .ini file, but a wizard might speed things up a bit.

Thanks for this. Is there any way you can persist this cache to disk and add the ability to initiate an update? While it works great after the first load, we frequently go in an out of GameEx to watch TV or otherwise mess with the computer. I know GameEx will evenually surpass Media Center Edition in terms of functionality, but in the meantime, back to my map file. ;)

As far as a wizard goes... what would be cool if there was some way to make it easy for users to exchange "wizard templates" for various emulators, sort of like how we're exchanging entries of our GameEx.ini now.

I dont plan to implement this directly in the GUI, but this is now possible anyway. For the emulator config just tell it use to the cached MAP File. There stored in the data directory.

Ah, perfect! That's actually even better. I can just set the networked machines to look at the server's cache file, and leave the main one looking at the regular list. :)
