Hello everyone,

Tom has been kind enough to give me my own webspace on the GameEx server, I've never made a website before, so i thought i'd give it a try, just to see how web-design works..it's going to be a fun project!

Its harder than i thought it would be (in particular the layout of pages) but im making progress...naturally the gameex page was the first section i've got stuck into, in fact its the only page thats done so far

The other pages will show some of the other types of creative work i've done in the past.

So...if anyone is bored drop by the site, and have a look, it will be updated pretty regularly, im adding to it most nights after work.

Comments appreciated

Alan

Very Clean site mate. The MCE Glossy download link is broken though. You've got a .gif at the end of the link (.zip.gif).

Thanks Adultery,

I might struggle with the html coding. Im using dreamweaver, at the moment i have made everything using the design layout view...i havent touched the coding yet!

Even the basic seem quite complicated, like making borders with rounded corners around text:

Here's a question for you...why are most webpages made up of .gifs? Whats the advantage over jpg or png?

Posted

Mostly gif files are used because they're much quicker to download when viewing the site. Typically I make thumbnails in gif and link them to png files for a 'click here to see full size image'.

Nowadays since almost no one uses dialup, there isn't much concern. JPG files can't have transparent backgrounds but are smaller than png files. and gif combines efficiency of JPG with the features a PNG has. Really it's an image format that was intended to decrease load time on pages and nothing more. :)

The gif format uses nondestructive compression. It's all about the number of colours you use. A Gif can therefore be HUGE, but if it only contains 4 colours, it will still not look like crap and have a small file size. Also, gifs can be animated. JPEG compression is better for photos, or images with thousands of colours. The png format is generally the best looking, because it uses some kind of nondestructive compression, but it tends to be bigger in size because of that.
