hey guys, i remember talk on this issue in the short past, but couldn't find it with the search. did anyone ever figure out exactly how to boot your pc up by pressing the spacebar? taking my pc out of my cab and wiring a microswitch to the power button will take too long and i'm not up for it. if i could just assign a button to the spacebar for startup it'd be like 4 minutes work. thanks all.

It should be a bios option.

Not all BIOS's have this function, but if you have a BIOS that supports boot on keypress your set. You might want to update your motherboards BIOS then check it out.

i'm in the same boat as walmartman. although i don't know how to update my bios. i know i can open my pc, bust the power button off and extend the wires up to a micro switch in my control panel, but that's gonna be my absolute last resort. you'd think there was a program like tweakgui that would allow a keystroke to boot the pc. this is the absolute LAst thing i need to troubleshoot before my arcade is 100%. i got back into finishing it recently, putting the marquee and bezel on.... i took a brief hiatas when it was functional, putting off the final touches, but i have completed the arcade as of tonight. if i can wire a switch to boot it (hopefully without butting my pc again) i'll be a happy camper, and the mission will be accomplished.

kaze, you came through with the tweakgui, and solved alot of my problems, i trust you have the knowledge on my and walmartman's problem.... and unfortunately google is NO help on this subject.

If you are splicing/lengthening the power wires you don't need to worry about pos or neg. By pressing the power button you are creating an open or closed circuit.

If you are building an arcade, then just buy a smart strip. If you want one buton to power on everything this is it.

http://catalog.bitsltd.us/

I have one of these which allows one button "Which is wired directly to my PC as the source power on" to fire up my Marquee, TV, Sub woofer, USB hub and my PC. My whole fricken arcade!

WARNING!!!!

- if you are using a TV and don't want to use the TV remote as the main power on - use tooth picks and jam the TV power button in the on position and use your PC as the main source "if you buy one you'll understand what I'm talkiing about."

For those using a regular PC monitor or actual arcade monitor then this section doesn't affect you.

Simply a MUST for any cabinet owner. B)

A search on BYOAC brings up heaps of ideas about booting pc's, the BIOS method, smart strip method, a button on the CP, a button connected to the front button on the PC, or directly to the motherboard. So it's worth having a read to decide what you want to do.

Here is a link on BYOAC which I believe has an actual diagram on hooking up a switch to the m/b.

Post back your results here, as it's one of the few things I havn't done myself yet either (Currently I open the front door and press the power button on the PC).

completely lost, no clear method of doing this. im not trying to fry my pc at these final stages of completion.

but kaze, is there anyway to tell what kind of motherboard i have within windows? a.k.a. without taking the pc out and opening it? i'm gonna try to update my board to the latest version and just pray to the heavens it gives me the "start with keypress" option.

I assume you have a GX280? It seems the A04 is the bios version. That appears to be the latest. That option is not listed in the bios. You can set a time of day to auto power on btw. Here is a list of all your bios options.

Hi Katuuuz. Is there a PWOR (Power On Reset -i think thats what its called) option in your BIOS settings ? When enabled it basically boots up the pc when it senses the mains voltage present. So if you have - say a four gang mains extension lead inside your cab (for tv,pc,marquee lighting etc) and you plug the other end into your mains socket on the wall everything will come on and your pc will boot up as well. Not sure if you have already tried this. You may have to look around the bios a bit to find it but i think judging by the bios version date you should have this option.

Hope this helps (it's what i use)

iano.

:)

EDIT: It's under Power Management in the BIOS and the setting is called AC Recovery (info from Ling's Post). Just set it to boot if power is reconnected/restored.

This, for me, is the last "must have" to get my arcade cab working right. Now I have to open the coin door and push the tower power button. I was reading over at BYOAC and wiring to the PC's button looks pretty easy. A user there, SpyStyle, has a pretty nice guide that shows the step by step to wire a button. I'm not that intimidated nor fearful of hurting my PC after having read it:

See chapter 11:

http://spystyle.arcadecontrols.com/01/index1.htm

While I have a SmartStrip it is located on the floor of my cab so it is even less convenient to get to than my tower for powering on and off. But save finding a way of powering my HP Pavilion on via the keyboard, which I'm not sure is even possible, wiring the button to my panel is the only way to get the one-touch power up implemented the way I want.

Yeah Kat, use spystyles's method or solder directly to your pc's power button like I did. IMO this is the best way to go. The smartstrip as mentioned above is great also for powering everything else on, once the computer is going.

I used the exact same method as the one headkaze has linked to here. Same dell switch and everything. Just used a normally open momentary switch from radio shack instead of an arcade switch. I put it out of the little guy's reach up high on the back of the cab.

jay t, nice to hear from you pal.

having the mini power minder your suggest, i didn't need to make that contraption everyone is talking about, i'm in love with the mpminder. i did decide to go this route... as suggested by many, i went into my bios and made it so the pc boots when ac power is returned. thus having my power minder with all my accessories plugged in the 2ndary port, and the pc plugged in the primary, i just click on the power strip and everything boots. awesome...

BUT as many of you remember, whenever i make a bit of progress something F's up on me. i guess if this didn't happen to me, i wouldn't be katuuuz. since i had to move the arcade all together i had to take the CP off to fit it through the door. so like an ass i decided it'd be a prime time to re-wire and neaten up my prior wiring job. BAD IDEA. i did it all up, and it was responding, but i forgot to wire my escape button, and my credit buttons were always on. no biggie, i unplugged the ipac without turning off the pc, fixed the errors, and upon plugging it back in i got my all time favorite message. "device not recognized". i tell you i came inches from burning my arcade to the ground. i tried it in all different usb ports but to no avail. if anyone can help i'd appreciate it, i just got through emailing andy, and i'm hoping he has good news. other than that wretched mishap, the arcade is finished and looking good. only i can't play now. F*&%*&!!!

Did you try to reinstall the driver?

i tried but it didn't find anything. i don't know what to do. also, i forgot to mention, when the ipac is plugged in, my system wont boot. the screen where you press F2 to access bios freezes... the bar fills up almost all the way and just sits there.

The problem is when you try to plug in the IPAC into a different USB port the driver gets messed up.

You need to run http://www.ultimarc.com/Ipacfix.reg then unplug and re-plug in the IPAC.

when i click that link it just sends me to a page with a lot of text.

Use the WinIpac Setup utility to program your I-Pac. Its a very common problem. Just create a batch file to program your keys on startup or when GameEx is launched. Then you don't have to worry about this problem. Thats how I fixed it. That reg fix did nothing for me.

if i just plug my ipac into my system it says "device malfunctioned and not recognized". will this still work? and if so, how do i do that?
