Hi all,

I'm trying to configure Game Ex on a Win 98 machine to work with Mame 0.58. I've tried both DMAME (i.e., DOS mame), and MAME32, but cannot get the games list to populate. I have confirmed that my paths are set correctly (i.e., pointing to the correct folders housing my roms and MAME executables), but I keep getting a 'No Games Found' message when I update my games list.

I noticed in the FAQ/docs that Game Ex is tested on newer versions of Mame. Has anyone successfully configured it with MAME 0.58? If so, are there any tips that you could pass along to help me? Unfortunately, I'm using an older machine (1 GHZ processor) in my MAME cabinet, so I don't think upgrading to a newer version of MAME is an option for me.

Many thanks in advance.

Unless youre trying to run CHDs, 1 gig is way more than enough to run most MAME games... Just for the record.

Try turning off the 'Verify Sets' option within GameEx and updating your MAME list. I can't promise that will work but you can try. :)

Thanks for the reply. I tried turning off 'Verify Sets' and also turned off all filters - still no games found.

Anyone have any ideas?

How about you try to generate the gamelist using a newer build of MAME? Then go into configuration and change the path back to your current .exe. If you have "Verify Sets" off it should at least create a list from all the roms that the new build recognizes. At this point, getting a game list is step one, right?

But if I were you, I would get a .100(or higher) build and update your roms to match it. And leave out the .chd games.

You can use clrMAMEpro to verify and rebuild the ROMs you have to match a new build of MAME if you don't want the other 2500+ games that have been added since 0.58 and just run the set you have...

I am not clear on the connecton between old versions of MAME and older computers. As far as I know the version has nothing to do with the hardware it runs on right? Why not just a newer version?

Newer versions of Mame emulate games more accurately and require more computing power to run. In many cases, the increased precision in the emualation is pretty subtle/unnoticable to casual users and the only practical outcome is that games that used to run fine in prior versions run more slowly in newer ones.

Ah...okay I am good with that. Still though a 1GHz PC should be fine for most all of them I would think. Oh well to each his or her own.

Im pretty sure the game list wont update with that version of MAME, you need a version of MAME that supports the XML output of the MAME info list, which was .6 something.

Snap! I forgot all about the xml output. :)
