I have one idea...

Go to your START menu and select the CONTROL PANEL.

Open the SOUNDS & AUDIO DEVICES category.

On the window that pops up, select the ADVANCED box.

Under ADVANCED AUDIO PROPERTIES, select the PERFORMANCE tab.

Check and make sure your HARDWARE ACCELERATION slider is set to FULL.

Hopefully that will end the scratchy (or poppy) sound issues you're having.

what kind of system are we talking about? could be a RAM issue. You could also try changing your default device in the same place adultery was talking about.

ok, thanks....unfortunatly i looked and it is already set to full....and i have 1gig of ram so i dont think that is an issue either....can customizing the skins slow it down maybe? thats the only thing ive done different, but im not sure when it started doing this, ive reverted back to the default skin but its still struggling on sound.. im using the onboard sound and the MOBO is only a few months old, my other mame is onboard sound too with no problems and its MOBO is almost 2 years old so im thinking theres a setting or software conflict somewheres.

-any suggestions..

I had this same issue which prompted me to buy a sound card. Same thing still occured, and I'm not sure what causes it. I have a personal feeling that is may be the VolumeControl.dll (seems to start happening when sound gradually fades out in GameEx after launching a game) which is why I wrote a new one for Tom myself, although he hasn't implemented it and I'm not sure if he will. The current VolumeControl.dll is written in VB6 and is the only file that is dependant on the VB6 runtimes. The one I wrote to replace it is pure C++.

Recently I was having sound issues again, but this time I found out it was the connection at the back of my soundcard. So now I'm not certain if it was that (although the fact this happend with my onboard sound as well as the Soundblaster Audigy makes me doubtful). I havn't had much of a chance to thrash my cab again lately to see if it happens again.

i think i figured out why the sound is lagging and skipping,, my cpu is running at 100% when gameex is in use.............i cant seem to find the thread that explains how to eliminate this...i remember reading about it somewhere, can someone point me in the right place.. thanks

GameEx runs at 100% for me all the time and I'm at a 2.5gig so I doubt that's it. But, if you want to tinker around, open your GameEx Advanced Config. On the Tweaks/Performance tab, you can change the value in Reduce CPU Utilization and see what that does for you.

Hope that helps! :)

under Tweaks/Performance tab like adultary says set the CPU utilisation to 15 this makes the cpu run @ 1-3% while gameex runs instead of 100% all the time this is on a 4000+ amd 64, 1gb ram

ok, i FINALLY figured out my sound problem,,, if any body else is haveing desynced or scratchy echoing sound..try this..

anyways after looking into to the problem way too deep, in the end i had the "triple buffering" option selected in the mame32 default game options (sheesh!, so simple...) after i deselected that it didnt matter what i changed to anything the sound stayed flawless!!!

also i found this troubleshooting sound thread that helped me figure it out and could help other sound issues ...hope this helps anyone.. and im stoked i have a perfect running machine again!!!
