Heya folks...just spent an enjoyable morning surfing the forums here, but haven't been able to come up with a solution for my problem:

I've been testing GameEx out on an old laptop of mine and have been able to get MAME and other emulator ROMs working. With high hopes, I moved everything over to a desktop that will be my cabinet's system. It's an AMD system with 512k ram and an ATI 9800 PRO running Win XP PRO. I am using S-Video out to run a signal to my home TV. Resolution is 800x600...

Problem is: I can load up GameEx and update my ROM list, but when I attempt to load any game in MAME, the screen goes black for a second and then quits right back to the GameEx screen. This is happening on a whole host of games..not all vert. oriented (I think, tried on congo bongo, Teenage mutant ninja turtles and others).

Anyway, finally got my control panel all wired up last night and really want to take it for a test run!! And I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong...

Thanks so much for your help!

Please post your gameex log in gameex/log directory. Also go into setup wizard and use the verify setup option. See if any errors are produced. What verison of mame you using? What rom version?

What version of mame are you using? Are you able to run the ROMs from within mame directly (without using gameex as the frontend)? Looks to me like a mame-settings error...

I was just thinking the same thing actually. :)

Make sure your ROM paths are correct in GameEx but it sounds to me like you're having issues getting MAME itself to boot... unless you're getting a specific error.

Post your GameEx log by opening START -> PROGRAMS -> GAMEEX -> LOG and copy/paste the info into a thread.

Heya folks,

First off, thanks so much for the replies! This is a really helpful community and I appreciate it!!

Sorry for the no response last night..for some reason, I couldn't post to the forum from my comp at home???

Anyway..I played around with GameEx some more last night and managed to fix the problem!! I erased the versions of MAME32 and AdvanceMAME I had on the computer and went straight to the homepages of each and downloaded fresh copies.

I was having a problem when I only had MAME32 installed that GameEx wasn't listing it on the Start screen? But this was resolved when I noticed that GameEx was looking for Advance MAME (Even though I had MAME32 setup in the GameEx wizard??). After I downloaded AdvanceMAME as well, MAME showed back up in the GameEx start screen.

BUT...I think the big problem was my screen resolution. I had my res. set to 800X600 and decided to see what happened if I set my resolution lower. When I dropped it to 640X?? all of a sudden MAME works perfectly!!!

I did copy my GameEx logs and setup verification...but it would seem that everything is running smoothly now...but I'll keep my fingers crossed for tonight! <grin>

And oh my gosh! It was SO cool to play some of my old favourites with proper controls!!! I stayed up waaay too late playing Rastan (never got to the castle in my quarter pumping days!!)

Next up is tweaking my keyboard layout on my IPac and the various emulators to get away from causing numerous windows conflicts (Keep getting the sticky keys reminder popping up when I play NES games..grrr)

Thanks again for your aid and I'm glad to make your aquaintance as I'm sure there will be more stumbling blocks along the way!! :D

You can turn off StickyKeys by selecting Start->Settings->Control Panel->Accessibility Options

Then under the Keyboard tab take away the tick next to "Use StickyKeys".
