I've ripped several DVD's to wmv format the past couple of days. These files play fine in windows media player, but will not play through Game Ex, I only get audio with a frozen image. What's wrong?

Personally, I converted all my wmv's to mp3's (was concerned about size) and everything is solid. You just need to rip those wmv's and all your problems will go away...

I am referring to WMV(video) not WMA(audio), because all of my wma files work fine in the jukebox. Also, all of my avi files work fine under my videos.

For some reason it won't play any of the wmv's correctly, even though the file works great in windows media player.

have the video files got any protection on them, I know wmp files both audio and video can need a licence to play them worth checking.

other than that im not sure.

video have no protection, and work fine in media player... I was under the impression that Game Ex uses media player to play its files? Maybe not, but is there a way to make this so? So that I can actually view these files? Maybe that's a better question to get these files working.

What version of WMV are they. I think GameEx uses the 9.5 WM Media Format SDK so probably only plays version 9 files. Is that the issue?

It does use WMP, but not directly it uses the WMP Media Format SDK, so less bloat etc.

I'm not quite sure how to determine the version of WMV, but I can tell you that they are 720x576 resolution, with a data rate of 1200kbps, 24bit video sample size, and have a stream name of "video 1"? I'm not quite sure what all of that means, but I can also tell you that I rip the DVD with a WMV3x codec.

I hope some of that information helps determine the problem.

Update:

I just ripped a wmv file that I managed to get to work in Game Ex. The codec is the exact same as the files that I can't seem to get working, the only difference is that I set the resolution of the file to 1280x800(laptop res). Why is it that this high res file will play, but my 720x576 files will not play.

(I'm getting somewhere)

Just throwing out a possibility, may or may not work....

It sounds like your videos you're encoding are being ran in PAL format. 1280x800 sounds more like NTSC. Perhaps this is where your problem lies. Try encoding at 720x480 rather than 720x576.... I've never read anything about GameEx requiring videos to be in NTSC format, but this may be the case. If it is, it's something everybody can benefit from knowing. I know that from personal experience, NTSC videos work fine for me in GameEx. I've never tried PAL, but that 526 is PAL format. Give it a try.
