Hi! I'm having an issue with the artwork bezels. A few years ago, I downloaded an artwork bezel pack for mame and I put it in the art folder and all the bezels worked fine. Now, I'm downloading some new bezels that I was missing from emumovies website. I've taken the zip folders and copied to the art folder in mame and they don't work . The file names are the same as the rom names so I don't know why they're not working but I've noticed when I click on the zip file I see within that file that the default .lay is missing from the files I downloaded. The other files I already downloaded have that default .lay in them. So I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I also noticed from the emumovies files that I recently downloaded for those bezels, it also shows me the bezel vertical and horizontal .ini files. My old ones never had those .ini files in them. So I don't know how to get these to work. Thanks for your help!

If they have .ini files they may be Retroarch and will not work with GameEx and MAME.

You also have to go into each game within MAME to set the bezel to be displayed for it.

Please attach copies of your gameex.ini and log.txt files to review your settings.  Thanks.

Is that why isn't it recognizing the new bezels? What is retroarch? I haven't changed anything since I added that old bezel pack a few years ago (from Proghetto Snaps and/or MrDues Arcade) . All the settings haven't been touched so why isn't it working? That's what I can't figure out. I was going back and downloading missing bezels and was trying to download the missing bezel for Zaxxon. Bezel and rom names match. I even went into the option/miscellaneous menu to verify that everything that should be checked off , was.  Shouldn't that automatically set the new bezels to the games? What is the step by step of setting up bezels? Am I missing something? Why isn't the existing artwork folder not recognizing the new stuff?

If you are using MAME, you need the bezels with the .lay files.

Bezels do not auto load when added to your artwork folder. They have to be selected from within the game upon launch, hitting TAB on your keyboard, and selecting under the display settings.

Please attach copies of your gameex.ini and log.txt files to review your settings.  Thanks.

If you're not familiar with editing scripts for the .lay files, you can learn about them HERE.  It can be intimidating, fun as well.

In MAME, each game with artwork needs to have a zip file in the artwork folder with the same name as the rom.  In that zip folder, will be all of you art files (bezels, etc.) and a .lay with the rom name as well.  The lay file is the extra script that tells MAME how to assemble your screen.  They are fairly easy to create on a single screen setup.  However, multiple screens will require a .ini file to get things sorted properly.  You can find out more about that HERE.

If  you get stuck or overwhelmed, shoot me a PM and maybe I can help.  I just learned all this stuff while we were isolating last year.

Hi Hank! When I downloaded the artwork files it had all the necessary ones in there including the default .lay file. So when I put them in the artwork folder in mame and when I select the game in mame that has the new artwork that I just downloaded, when I press the tab key and go to video options, I'm able to see all the bezel options but when I click on one of them, nothing appears. These new bezels aren't opening up. I never had problems with the old bezel packs I downloaded a few years ago, they worked/opened right away.

Try renaming default to the rom name and then zip it as the rom name.

Thanks for jumping in, @HanksLounge! I don't know all things so always appreciate when members are able to help one another get things sorted.

Was there anything different showing in my .ini files? I've done everything that I can think of and doing what I should be doing and nothing is working. I'm watching dudes on YouTube doing exactly what I was doing and it's working for them. What am I missing? Hank, I tried renaming that default and that didn't work. I'm really confused.

Can you attach a copy of one of the files you acquired that is not working. Identify the ROM name(s) and the game name associated?

Hi Draco! I'm trying to attach the Zaxxon file I downloaded from emumovies but I'm receiving this error: "1 file was larger than the maximum file size of 1024kb and was skipped". I downloaded it through my girlfriend's tablet and am replying using it. She transferred it to my laptop top (having issues logging in to emumovies through the laptop but for some reason it works through her tablet) and used a USB key to transfer it to my arcade company. I'll try again through my laptop.
