Are there any known drivers/hardware/processes/antiviruses that will conflict with GameEx and not allow it to run properly? I've been looking for help in another topic to try to get GameEx to work on my computer. On occasion, I can get a mame game to run, but most of the time GameEx just returns to the mame menu screen. Since it has worked a couple of times, I'm narrowing it down to a driver or process on my machine that is preventing it to work most of the time. Yes I've searched this forum and tried every adjustment I could find, but none have worked for me. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks Ricci for offering to help. Here's the copy from my first post in another thread:

I'd really love to get this program working and make a donation to unlock all the features. Most of the time it will load, but occasionally it won't and I get an error, I'll post the error log. Also if it does load, when I try to launch a mame game, screen goes blank and goes right back to gameex. I've spent hours reading the FAQ's and trying all the suggestions I can find that were already posted, but I just can't get it to work - turned off bezel, just updated video driver... Any help is appreciated

My setup:

P4, XP home SP2, 1Gig ram, video ati 9200 256mb

I've tried so many things. Without some help I'll have to abort. I've updated to SP 2, latest video drivers, clean install of .net frame 1.1, directx 9.0. I've tried 16 bit graphics, no advanced graphics, turned off bezel. I've given it most of a day. Please - any help out there?

I'm using mame32. It works great outside of GameEX.

I think it was suggested that you upgrade to net framework 2.0. I see you are using 1.1. It also appears that your log file is exiting at a direct x error. I see you are using 9.0. But what ver.? Make sure you have the latest DX. I think its ver C. Plus you are using a PCI card I think. I'm not sure how that impacts things with gameex.

Posted

I have upgraded to net framework 2.0 and after that gameex will start every time with out that error log. So I was pretty excited to get that far. However, when I go to launch a mame game, the screen goes blank and comes back to gameex. Like I said, I've tried turning off the bezel feature, am running 16 bit color and turned off advanced graphics. The video card is agp. I tried playing with the bios settings and increased agp appeture from 128 to 256mb.

I double checked and have the latest directx - but again, Gameex starts every time now. The problem now is getting the mame games to launch and not get sent back to gameex.

Twice I was able to launch a mame game (battlezone). After running the game and exiting, I would try to run the same game again, but it went back to gameex. This is when I started thinking there may be something in my set up that is causing the problem.

Here is my last log file:

Is Mame running okay outside of GameEx? Try it by selecting Start->Run and enter the following:

cmd.exe /c G: G:\GAMING\Mame32\Mame32.exe bzone -rompath G:\GAMING\Mame32\roms -volume -32

Does the game run okay?

Mame32 has been working great - that is launching games from the Mame32 application. I've play around with what you are asking me to do. If I go:

Start > Run> cmd /c G: G:\GAMING\Mame32\Mame32.exe bzone -rompath G:\GAMING\Mame32\roms -volume -32

my screen goes blank and returns to windows

If I go

Start > Run > G:\GAMING\Mame32\Mame32.exe bzone -rompath G:\GAMING\Mame32\roms -volume -32

I'm playing battlezone as if I had launched it from the Mame32 app.

I'm assuming this is correct. Isn't the "cmd /c" command necessary only from within the GameEx internal command and not necessary from Start > Run...

Posted

GameEx uses cmd (Command Line) to launch emulators but you can run cmd from Start. The problem with the command line arguments looks to me like the G: just after cmd /c. I don't know what it's doing there.

Try Start > Run>

cmd /c G:\GAMING\Mame32\Mame32.exe bzone -rompath G:\GAMING\Mame32\roms -volume -32

Does that work?

Posted

yes to all current video drivers.

If I try Start > Run

cmd /c G:\GAMING\Mame32\Mame32.exe bzone -rompath G:\GAMING\Mame32\roms -volume -32

I come right back to desktop.

If I remove the /c switch, like this:

cmd G:\GAMING\Mame32\Mame32.exe bzone -rompath G:\GAMING\Mame32\roms -volume -32

I get the command prompt.

It seems that anything after the "cmd" command is ignored. I'm currently trying to find any settings on my system that are not allowing these commands. From the command prompt I did a "help cmd" and that had me poking around in the registry. From what I could understand, I think the values are correct. I get really grey in this area so some help would be great.

Help me on this. From Start > Run, try "cmd edit" . I get the command prompt. If I try Start > Run "edit" I get the blue "dos" text editor. On your computers, what do you get if you go Start > Run "cmd edit" ??? If you get the same as I do, maybe were looking in the wrong place for my gameex trouble?

I think others will get the same. Running "cmd..." from Start > Run would be like running cmd cmd (twice) or that's the best way I can explain it. Maybe someone else can confirm and I can move on to the next most likely cause - whatever that may be..

That's not true, running from start does not run cmd, so it's not running twice.

Well, if your Mame and Roms are not located in the same place as his then of course you will get nothing!

Okay, I've done some testing myself, running the following on my machine (with paths changed) does not work...

Start->Run

cmd /c C: C:\Emulators\Mame32\Mame32.exe bzone -rompath C:\Roms\Mame -volume -32

But this DOES work...

Start->Run

cmd /c C:\Emulators\Mame32\Mame32.exe bzone -rompath C:\Roms\Mame -volume -32

After launching bzone from GameEx I get the following from the log file...

05:52:59.8 2/11/2006: Running: cmd.exe /c C: C:\Emulators\Mame32\Mame32.exe bzone -rompath C:\Roms\Mame -triplebuffer -nowindow -joy

The game launched fine from GameEx with that line above, so now I'm pretty sure there is something other than GameEx causing your problem.

I wasn't actually trying to launch a game. I was just typing "cmd edit" to see if I got the same results as him. I have experienced the same launching rom back to gameex bug/user error. I can't remember how I fixed this in the past. I do know it was something on my part I was doing wrong. I think I was trying to launch a rom that either didn't work or was missing files.

There's nothing I am aware of. I think the majority of folks have no issues. I have no ideas why its not working for you, and its nothing to do with the command line, it's generally very stable software as most folks here will tell you, more stable than a lot of software. All I can suggest, is if your that keen to run GameEx you try reinstalling windows and starting from scratch with the latests versions and drivers.

By the way, that command in the log is kind of pseudo, to test the Game on its own look at the run last game link in the program group. GameEx creates a batch file .bat everytime it runs something and runs the .bat file (I dont think your realised that HK).

If I open a cmd window, I can't use mame commands to launch a rom. If I open a command.com window, mame works fine. I think my problem is with my cmd.exefile

Actually I was aware of the batch file GameEx creates for launching an emulator. DATA\runitgame.bat. Totally forgot about it!

@ECHO OFF

C:
CD "C:\Emulators\Mame32"
Mame32.exe bzone -rompath "C:\Roms\Mame" -triplebuffer -nowindow -joy

You should probably try running that to see if the game launches. The log file is obviously not the command it uses to launch. Oops :)
