I updated to 2.0 with the extra updates afterwards and it seems that it went away.

What happend basically was that GameEx just kept eating up all of my RAM. I had it running the screensaver when I got a crash eventually after about 1.5 hrs or so with a really long error message from .net framework called "outofmemory". I closed that, hit ctrl+alt+delete and went look at the performance. GameEx was using about 60 mb memory at that time and slowly increasing if I let it be that way. I have now installed .net FW 2.0 and am now running screensaver once again to check if it's gone away.

I'm also experiencing the "stutter effect" as mentioned by someone else here recently. Hopefully deleting my page files will fix this. Trying that later.

Tom, I can attach my .net error log here if you want me to. I tried checking the GameEx log after the crash, but as I had to kill GameEx it's incomplete and useless. But it seems to me that GameEx no longer runs smoothly under .net 1.1.
