finally got my hands on a DC, and have a simple question. What exactly is the USB port for? I'm guessing you can save game progress to a computer hardrive? This would be awesome if true, if you could get back to me I'd appreciate it. Didn't see a Dreamcast section on the chankast forums, just deals with emulation.

quick question...

i downloaded nba showtime on nbc for dreamcast to burn for my DC console... it came in 24 parts, but they were the filename.001 through filename.024. i figured i'd just put .rar on the end of each which turned them into the winrar icon and upon extracting part 001, it says required filename.001.00r?! is this a bad download or did i do this wrong?

I'd love to help you katuuuz. BUT that would promote piracy.

That could have and should have been phrased differently.

How ever I don't view a question about how to open a multi-part archive as supporting piracy...how ever lingpanda is correct that in part some of your question is out of bounds.

Any ways you are correct that it is more than likely a WinRAR spanned archive...as such you do not have to append .rar to the end of the file name.

As such you should just right click on the .001 file and select "Open with" from the context menu...if that doesn't show up press and hold down "SHIFT" prior and during your right click of the .001 file...in ether case select WinRAR and let it open and extract the file.

In the future please be more careful of how you phrase things.

thank you, i see too what he means, but DC isn't even made anymore, so you may as well just consider the games nes roms.

Hey Kat...

Change the file extensions to .r01 .r02 and so on. Open with WinRAR.

cool. thanks adultry.

nologic and ling,

honestly, if i can't go into a retail store (gamestop, ebgames, walmart, target etc) and buy a dreamcast, or any accessories games (i know there's ebay) how is it piracy? even if you purchase them on ebay the company/studio isn't making money, a person who already paid dues to the company/studio is.

(i'm not trying to be difficult, i understand my wording could have been phrased better in my original post but is dc downloading/burning piracy?!)

Posted

Well its simple enough to answer...do you own the game? If no then its piracy...all other issues have no bearing on the primary issue and question.

I personally have been bit by software piracy, as I use to be part owner in a software company that was driven out of biz because there wasn't enough sales...it wasn't because there wasn't enough users...hehe there was a lot of them enough to actually make me fairly wealthy if they all had paid for it...but they didn't. Hence why you can afford to build a cab...and I can't.

I'm by no means going to say that my nose is clean because it isn't...but don't go kidding your self that what you are doing is right...because its not.

There may very well be some guy on eBay that is selling off his Dreamcast games...not because he wants to, but because he needs to in order to put food on the table. By you downloading the game rather than buying it from him, him or his kids maybe going hungery tomorrow.

That how ever is a what "if" type deal. Course by the same token "if" all the users of my software had paid for it, I would be able to buy every machine Mame currently supports, instead of using pirated rom's I could dump my own.

I'm afraid Nologic is right on this, and I was hoping you guys would sort yourselves out. Talking about pirating Dreamcast ROMs or NES ROMs is against the forum rules. Dosn't mater if the console in question is dead. Keep it clean guys :)

Posted

well i understand what you are saying nologic, and you know i got a lot of respect for you for we've talked in past times alot when you helped me trouble shoot configs and what not. the only reason i download roms/isos is because if i didn't, i wouldn't be able to play past time favorites of mine unless the manufactorers themselves re-released them. in the case of nes, snes, genesis, n64, psx (i think), and DC and MAME they won't be releasing these games. I wouldn't ever d/l burn xbox, 360 (if you even can yet), ps2 games because i can purcahse/rent these still. plus i'm not distributing the games for money or requiring coins in my arcade machine.

as far as your case being part owner of the software company that took a hit due to the fact, i feel for you in every respect. i myself am a barber and drummer. i'm not saying i was gonna make it in my band big, but music is another area that took a huge hit due to downloading and burning, anyways and like i said i'm not trying to be an ass or start shi!, just debating,

Posted

Well debating is fine, but one needs to keep things in perspective as well.

A fair amount of people sell off what they have bought from an original retailer in order to make new purchues from the same or different retailer.

I typically sell off my old car before I buy a new one...or do so shortly afterwards. This allows Ford or Chevy or who ever to continue to make money off me...where if my older car was worth nothing...I wouldn't be able to buy into a newer car. Hell and some other guy wouldn't be able to get into a car at all.

This applies to a lot of other fields than just car's, computers, houses, software, games,...

I resale a lot of my older stuff at a very marked down rate compared to what I paid originally...well because one its old and second its used...but since its cheaper than new stuff, some one that can afford that price point is able to get some thing they want...and because they made that purchuse it allowed me to get some thing that I wanted.

Primary point here is that some times protecting old outdated products helps insure current product sales.

Any ways we should probably end this before we get our ass's in to much trouble. :)

cheers to that. sorry i should've sent you a pm about it if i wanted to further discuss it.

if i were to purchase a DC controller off ebay, would a european controller work on my US console? along with vmus/tremor packs/light guns?

Posted

I would image...but then again I don't know for certain...but I can see no reason why they would make them incompatable...as it would just be more of a tech support headache.

yeah that's what i mean, i'd guess so too but don't want to waste $$ if that 1% chance ends up being true. my dc came with 2 original controllers, and i found some originals on ebay, but only from the UK. (not a fan of aftermarket controllers)

Let me start by saying i'm not "clean". It's just not talked about freely. Sega of Japan is actually still selling Dreamcast systems and new games online. It's still maing money for them. The wiki I posted on DC was a good read.

Kat-

If you're looking for hardware for your DC, check out a resale shop (ie Babages, Electronics Boutique or GameStop) They got the best deals and a huge selection of used DC games.

Harder to get items are a bit more expensive however...

Hope that helps. :)

Ling-

The Dreamcast was available as a reissue for a short time, however it is no longer being produced. This is mostly due to the fact that it could not boot CDRs and the underground / homebrew community wasn't interested in a console they couldn't mod or write for.

Hope that helps! :)

Well that stinks... I wanted Sega to get back in the game.

i'd love for sega to be back, for dreamcast's short lived run, i was more than satisfied with it. i bought it the december after it came out and was addicted. of course i sold it a year or 2 after it had died out, but am glad i got my hands on a nother one and won't be letting this one go.

What I find does occasionally work with sequenced rar files is to associate the 1st archive (called) filename.001 with winrar or open winrar and browse into the 001 file.

Just a thought ;)
