Hi all. I just downloaded GameEx and so far it's working great. I'm using it with a goodmerge set of snes roms. My only problem is that it is very slow to load the list of roms when I click on a game name, and it's annoying for the more popular games to scroll through a billion hacks to get to the version I want to play. Is there any way either to have it pick a certain rom by default (for example, always pick the [!] rom in each archive) or to speed up it's performance selecting a rom from the archive?

Its slow because GameEx extracts the archive each time, so picking a certain game won't help.

If your intent on using goodmerge, the only solution I can think of would be to change the compression level of the 7-zips to improve performance when extracting. This could potentially make a big difference, but will take up a little more hard disk space. Alternativle you could modify the 7-zips of your favorites so they dont include all the junk.

ya i'd just extract it to the hard drive, and specify a rom filter in gameex config. ex..: *(U) [!].smc

that way it will show games ending in (U) [!].smc

Thanks for the advice guys. Hard drive space is at a bit of a premium so extracting everything isn't really an option. However, after installing command-line 7-zip I have noticed much faster response times in the menu system. I already had IZArc installed which supports 7z but seems to have been much slower than 7zip.exe. Thanks for this great software, it really never ceases to amaze me with its capabilities.

I have a suggestion. Instead of decompressing the 7z files why not just reading the 7z archive, gettig the file listing, and then decompressing only the rom selected. I am sure there must be something in the 7z library to get a string matrix containing the files of the archive. Then it should be easy to construct a "virtual" listing for the GUI.

I think thats a brilliant idea. Post it up over in the Feature Requests thread so Tom can consider implementing it (if it's possible).
