what's the best way (if there is a way) to configure the cpu to run gameex on startup, and be able to shutdown through gameex (i know of the feature) but not have it say "your computer's ready to be shut off" but actually have it shut down as it would if you do it manually in xp?

I am assuming you are using Windows 98. You may have to go into your computer's BIOS and see if you have a thing called apm (advanced power management), or ACPI (advanced configuration and power interface) if so then turning it on may get rid of the final "It's now safe to turn off your computer" message. If your computer is older you may not have this option and will be stuck with that screen, sorry.

As far as starting GameEx on startup, simply create a shortcut to GameEx and put it in your startup folder in the start menu, or you can download and install instant sheller to hide windows completely. I do beleive instant sheller is for windows xp only however, so no good if you are using win98.

Good Luck

definitely using xp. i'm not liking how serious that sheller sounds "make sure you stuff is backed up." i have all my romsets backed up, but have come too far to lose all of it, and have to spend a mess load of time dumping it all back on my cpu. there's a shut down option in game ex, and as i stated i'm running XP, why when i click that i get the win98 message "your computer is now safe to shut down?"

Wow got me there, I'm not sure why XP would display that message when being shut down through GameEx. Does it only do it through GameEx? The only thing I can tell you is look in your BIOS and check the advanced power configurations. I've seen a similar screen in win 2000 without the advanced power set correctly but never in XP. Very strange. Perhaps someone else has seen this. Sorry that didn't work for you.

It's a subject in itself: http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Hiding_Windows

re: your questions:

1. Startup: Either a start menu item or an item in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Run (or a user's version of this key, if you want to restrict to one particular account) or change the shell (See Replacing Explorer With Your FE In XP in URL). Depends on how far you want to go...

2. Shutdown: To stop that message:

See Getting rid of the "Loading settings" Popup screens in URL. Setting the entry it describes will stop the 'ready to shut-off' msg, I think? EDIT: I think I'm wrong here! but setting the option does reduce the windows messages during startup and shutdown...

it could be 2 things

1 ,is your power supply at or atx, because as far as i know only atx power supply can shut down completley,

2, have you checked your bios and see that it is set that when you press the power button it shuts down the computer and not just turn it off,,

BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System. When you first turn on your computer, depending on your motherboard, you will usually see a dark DOS looking screen with some writing on it flash quickly. Sometimes it will say press F2 to enter BIOS or Esc or del or F10, it just depends on your motherboard. If you are unfamiliar with the bios I have only one warning for you, don't change anything unless it has something to do with the power management stuff we discussed earlier, and only change one thing at a time, test and if it doesn't work change it back before trying something else. Nothing you do in the BIOS is ir-reversible, but I don't want you to get some new problems by changing something you shouldn't. Just be mindful of what you change and if it doesn't work try something else. If your motherboard supports advanced power management you should be able to get rid of that shut down screen. Hope this helps.

Here is the official Microsoft answer: It is Now Safe to Turn Off Your Computer" error message when you try to shut down your computer

Don't know if you fixed it or not but here is a way you can.
