is there an option to remove the same gameames in the emulators?

for example: when looking at the snes games in gameex i see the game "3 ninjas kick back" about 5 times, each of them opening the same game, can i set an option to reduce them to only show the game 1 time?

In your gameex config window. Set filter to not show clones.

That won't work with snes game would it? I mean they aren't really clones there different versions and dumps of the game. I think that would only work in mame. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It is possible...

First of all though, you aren't opening the same game each time! In the emulator configuration section: set Remove Text In Brackets to NO. When you reload GameEx you'll see 5 different rom versions of "3 ninjas kick back", this time followed by bracketed text.

The bracketed text is versioning information. This can be quite complex in nature and standards seem to vary for different consoles. You'll need to do a bit of research to dig up what the bracketed text is telling you exactly...

To start you off:

For SNES, I think the ones that end (U) are the official US releases.

For NES, I think the ones that have (!) on the end are 'official'.

(Perhaps somebody could correct me if I'm wrong or give a link in the full info...)

Aswell as the 'official' versions you'll see loads of 'hacks' and other regional language versions etc. You may be interested in playing these alternatives of course. But if you're not...

Luckily (although not surprisingly given the quality of this software) Tom has implemented some PATTERN MATCHING on his ROM Filter field in the emulator configuration. So INSTEAD OF *.zip for the SNES ROM filter you could specify *(U).zip and this would EXCLUDE any roms that DIDN'T end "(U).zip". i.e. You'd just get a list of official US releases!

You can combine filters (separated by a semi-colon), so *(U).zip;*(J).zip might give official US and Japan versions.

Although not completely foolproof (as some games might only have a (Hack) version) you could cut down your list considerably...You'd need to experiment to get a list that suits you.

Note: There might also be other pattern matching symbols (E.g. %#) that are also not documented either. I don't know.

Hope that helps to slim your list!

Pinched from a help file I helped to create (tho I did little work in it).

What do all those funny symbols in the file names mean?

There are various sources from which ROMS can be derived from. Asides from commercial games in their various beta/demo stages, final releases and market localizations that dumping groups track down and provide there are the following....

Public Domain - ROMS that are usually created by hobbyist programmers trying their hand at programming for game systems. In some cases commercial copyright holders have given consent for their games to be in the publlic domain.

Hacks - ROMS hacked by hobbyists typically to modify the game to either increase difficulty and/or other play and graphic features. Another popular reason for hacking is to translate the language used in the game from one dialect to another.

To allow users to clarify which ROM is which a series of symbols representing various aspects of the file were developed. See below for details on what each symbol means.

Standard Codes

[!] Verified Good Dump

[a] Alternate to the original dump often done by another dumping group.

[o] Overdump of a rom which has too much space allocated for it making it too big.

[p] Pirate rom released without consent or stolen from the original dumping group.

Bad Dump of a rom that probably doesn't work properly.

[f] Fixed to run better on emulators or bug fixed.

[h] Hack of a rom that has possibly an intro added or graphics changed.

[t] Trained rom that has a small bit of code that lets you cheat in the game.

[T] Translation of a rom from one language to another.

sometimes with even some good filters setup, you are going to end up with identical names with brackets removed, and in somes cases you actually want both versions, but if you keep brackets removed on, it makes it hard to see what is going on, which version is which, adding a new feature that i mentioned before of a Smart Remove Brackets, it would be great for gameex to not remove brackets from those games that would end up having identical rom names to another file if they were removed, but still go ahead and remove brackets from all other games. Doing the filtering and keeping brackets on right now is good enough, but sure would love a feature that did that, to make the gaming list look alot better. :)
