MAME 1.07 - Any cool games now working with new vid?

I still haven't updated to the new 1.07 yet & I'm curious if the update is that big of a deal. Are there any games that didn't work before now working or games that were unplayable before & are now playable, such as soul calibur or any of the tekken games, or perhaps some of the stuff that we needed zinc/sega model 2 for is no longer neccessary?

What's the real advantage with the new MAME 1.07?

Hi guys -- I'm right there with Marker --- I'm running on an arcade monitor via Andy's AVGA, and I'd love some feedback on performance, both with Mame and GameEx. I did update and test on my PC, and frankly the blurred image I was experiencing with D3d was putting me off - wouldn't even know what setting to use for my arcade machine. Therefore, I'm deferring to this awesome crew to fill a brother in. Thanks all!

You have to run with -video ddraw -nohws

Other than that its the same. I don't know if it is much faster, I didn't really experience any slow downs on the old version. It really depends on what games you play.

The -resolution auto works well and I have removed all my individual INI files created with ArcadeVGARes.exe.

I don't us artwork, bezels etc but there are apparently lots of improvements there.

Cheers,

Matt

Yeah - you gonna need to read the WHATSNEW.TXT in MAME to see what you are/were at and changes upto 107 see see what has been added

Although ZINC games have been included as part of MAME, I still use ZINC to play ZINC games for the speed

Also you probably want to get a mame build compiled for your processor type to get a little more horsepower out of it

altered beast now works on all levels finally!

i run mine with -video d3d -nofilter (removes the blurryness) -noswitchres (keeps it at 1024x768 and stretches video to fit, sounds bad, looks great)

and it works great! i find that all games are a lot more smoother and seem to look nicer!

I'll wait for a MAME32 version to come out. Sounds like too much effort for me. Lately I've been getting back into DOS emulation, finally got Syndicate Wars working - w00h00.

if -nofilter is the same as turning off bilinear filtering, i get horrible scaling artifacts (to 848x480). also these show through enhancements

so i leave filtering on and use some enhancement effects

i don't think its possible to have both crisp pixels and no scaling issues unless you run a perfect multiple res for each game. and i can't run diff reses per game its too complicated.

this is not an issue with 107 though - i like 107, i think it should be faster if you have a decent D3D9 video card. havent tested yet. and you can fall back to ddraw anyway.

anyway, this is the future and you're going to have to adjust to it at some point unless you want no further improvements and become one of this trogladites that says "yarrrggg, i'm stikin with me old version forevaaaahh"

The issue (and its a big one) I have with using Direct3d when its not necessary as with MAME .107. Is that DirectDraw runs great through terminal services and VMWARE, Virtual PC etc. I do most of my development through terminal services, and MAME .107 dont run on it, and Direct3d in emulation mode is worse than watching paint dry.

Wheras GameEx and older MAME runs at about 30 fps through terminal services, it also runs on VMWARE and virtual PC.

Maybe they should have a few folks at MS considering things like this next time they decide to drop something.

Thanks for all the great responses - and Tom, thank YOU for this awesome front-end. I am a PROUD registered user bro.

At this point in time there is a Mame32 out for v.107 --- has anyone out there used 32 for their arcade cab and could you recommend settings for AVGA? I'd really appreciate it. I see suggestions above for command line, and wonder what their GUI counterparts are in M32.

THANKS TO EVERYBODY!!

I plan on eventually updating, but with all the new versions of GameEx (awesome job BTW Tom, you rock like a mountain) & all the computers I've been working on & all the DOS crap & yada yada yada, I just want to sit back & play for awhile man. I've had Leisure Larry 9 for 4 days now, I've got to play it once. Since there's no real immediate improvement on anything I like to play, like Soul Calibur, or the Tekken games, or no longer need ZiNc/Sega 2, or really... anything that effects me gaming-wise, I just don't see the rush.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's fantastic they improved the video code - that's great, but now it's leaving me in a position to go playing the "what makes the video look best" puzzle & what do I gain? For the moment, nothing much. Just not worth it to me until they at least come out with a mame32 version.

At this point in time there is a Mame32 out for v.107...
Ahhhh.... so there is. i kept going to an old MAME32 site, was still at the old version. Good to know. I'm still not switching yet, but I probably will within the next week or 2.

Marker0077, i know what you mean, it's really hard to get the thing stable and JUST LEAVE IT ALONE! :)

btw mameplus 107 has been out for a few days and im using it, the gui is unstable for some people but games seem to run fine from cmd

Tom,

good point, but does that affect normal users or just devs really? i'm not seeing a huge difference over VNC ;) and why can't use you use ddraw in 107 with the old result?

Hi,

I think I read somewhere (probably BYOAC) that Hi Scores are not supported in the new Mame release. If this is the case, I'm staying on my current version!

As long as you have the option to save the game & have it restore when loaded, scores should be saved. Another big reason why I'm waiting for MAME32 (too lazy to search for the command).
