im just woundering if gameex will ever be able to use goodset roms

like if you wanted to play a genisis game u could click on it and it would show u all the roms inside that one .7z and u could click one and it would play that one

some emulators support .7z files but it doesnt let you to choose wich rom to load

Hi EMKO,

I would not say never, but its certainly not planned at the moment or anytime soon.

Hey Emko,

The "good" sets have afaik nearly nothing to do with 7z. Exept that .7z is directly supported by goodtools and is some kb smaller than .zip.

I deflated my 7z Good sets and used Stalker (a batch Zipper) (http://zerosoft.zophar.net/) to make zips from each rom. You will get some more Megabytes than before, but the will still be zipped. (i.E. Nes (0miss, 10783have) will be 1184 MB on your HD, if each file is zipped with Compression Level 9)

It costs some time, but you can use good tools to audit these zips, too. Nearly every Emu that supports .7z also supports .zip

I have all my good sets in Zips and no problems with gameex and goodtools.

As described in the forum, you can't have merged Roms in one zip (i.E. all Super Mario Clones in one zip) if you want to use GameEx.

The 7z good sets I know are all merged romsets which won't work for most emulators. So you maybe have to repack them as described above.

i hope they one day add merged sets into gameex

lol when i unzipped my snes goodset its now around 10 gigs befor it was 1.4

but the problem is i wanted to have snapshots for each game and now i have to add it for each game version 2 wich is going to take for ever since all of my roms are goodsets and merged with .7z

it would look cleaner if merged roms would work but i quess ill just have to wait and hope they make it work one day

Would it be GameEx or the Emus that need to support 7z?

I did a comparison of Zip vs 7z...

F-Zero X (for N64)

all 17 Good roms in one file: (E, U, J, hacks, bad roms etc)

Extracted = 272mb

Zip = 210mb (done with WinRar set at 'Best' compression)

7z = 12mb!!!

For N64 games 7z is pretty impressive.

well most emulators cant run .7z and i think gamex needs to unzipp them befor loading them

or if the emu does let u use .7z files it wount let u to choose wich rom to load it just loads one

I am afraid at least for the moment, I am of the 'buy a bigger hard disk' mind set.

The project focus is on functionality, features, being the best and most of all fun, rather than cost per MB.

Thanks,

oh well im just hopeing it could be done

i would unizzpe them all but that will be a mess if i wanted to play a game from snes the list would have over 10 000 roms plus then i would have to make 10 000 + snapshots for each rom that would take very long time and all my roms are like that

Sometimes you just have to say "WHY?"

In the interest of collecting I archive all my ROMS off to DVD, and yes I have most every ROM for most consoles and MAME (and no don't ask me for them, or where I got them, it took many years to accumulate).

However I have a very small hard drive in my Arcade Cabinet, and I don't see the need to have every game in existence on it. So I only have US console ROMS except for a few titles that were never released domestically. I filter my MAME ROM set heavily because I don't need CHD's that won't run, and foreign language games that I can't read anyway (trivia, mahjong).

I personally don't have time to play the thousands of games in the cabinet already, not to mention the insane number of variants that are available and not inherently any better. And I have a "to play" list for Dreamcast/Xbox/PS2 that is relatively long as well, there just isn't enough time in the day.

Save yourself a lot of hassle: archive your clones, and put originals only into your frontend/cabinet. It's cleaner and takes a heck of a lot less space.

I went so far as to remove some emulators entirely from my cabinet that I never play, or which look like crap on a 19" screen. I respect all systems from a nostalgia perspective, but I just don't find myself playing 2600/colecovision/intellivision ever these days, and most portables look pretty crappy on an arcade monitor. I am getting to the point where NES might make the cut, but the roms take very little space and there are a handful of exclusives that I still play (Punch Out).

See my signature to get an idea what systems I am running currently.

That's what i was going to do with my roms

Windows Explorer search is a good tool if used properly.

For example if you search snes ROMS for *[J]*.* that will list all roms with [J] in the filename. Then you can cut and paste those to a new directory.

Use the same technique for other roms, until youve got your primary roms dir down, then you can manually go in and move other roms you dont want to another dir.

There are free programs around that do this for MAME, yourll just have to have a look around, unless some others know. You can also use search again though for finding files based on size, and then move them off to another dir.
