[RESOLVED] PinballX crashing after being in attract mode for a while

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi,

This is my first post here and I hope someone can help.

PinballX is crashing after being in attract mode for a while.

It also hangs when I press and hold down either flipper for a few seconds to scroll through titles quickly.  This hang isn't random at all like the attract mode hang.  If I hold down the flipper and let it scroll for 3 seconds or more, it will hang and I have to do a ctrl-alt-delete to start taskmgr to exit the program.

Here's my log file

Here's another crash log.  It was in attract mode for less than 5 minutes I believe, and just crashed on its own without me doing anything at all...

One last log.  This time it crashed while I was "slowly" flipping through tables with the flippers after playing a brief game of Funhouse.

If you don't mind please post your pinballx.ini and log.txt files as attachments to your thread as this is a lot of scrolling when trying to see the message from a smartphone.

I would recommend installing Visual Pinball in its own folder on c:\ instead of under c:\program files(x86) as that is treated by Windows as a more protected area.

Could be part of the issue based upon the error

Since I've been waiting for a response, I have done more searching and a few people with crashes talked about their Spark2007/LAV files needing updating so I updated those to the latest version and installed the latest version of PinballX.

So far, I haven't gotten another hang up and now I can rapidly scroll through the tables.

I'm not ready to say this is resolved  yet because I feel it needs more time, but this is definitely progress.

If the error comes back, I'll reinstall everything in a directory like C:\Visual Pinball and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for your input.

Well, I got the error again.  It crashed while in attract mode.

It's going to be a huge pain and very tedious to change directories for Visual Pinball.

I'd love to have some other opinions and other things to try first if someone could chime in here.

In attract mode, is it even accessing anything from the Visual Pinball directory?

If you are fighting against USC and Windows protected areas, then you can expect issues. Things that need to be addressed:

Are you running your exes as Administrator?

Are you running from protected file paths?

Are you running the latest LAV codecs (and not both LAV and Shark007)?

Posted

Yes, I'm running exe's as administrator.

I don't know what this means, protected file paths?

I DO have both Shark007 and LAV codecs installed.  Should I uninstall Shark007?

Thanks,

Sorry for being brief. Was basically saying it is most likely a codec issue of some sort. Just to point things in the right direction in order to help resolve the problem.

Thanks.

Tom.

No problem.  Thanks so much for chiming in.

I have both Shark007 and LAV installed.  I just upgraded both of them to the latest version.

Should I only have one installed?  If so, which one?

Posted

Upgrading them allows me to hold down the flipper and scroll as long as I want now.  I also have only had one crash in attract mode.  After that one crash, I changed my attract mode table change setting from 15 seconds to 30 seconds and have left it on attract mode all night (6 hours or so) and haven't had another crash....yet.

Ditch the Shark007. You only need LAV now.

take a look at my response to the "freezing videos" problem someone else was having.  it might help depending on how desperate you are.  what I experienced started the same way as you with things getting stuck when I scrolled in attract then got worse and worse....the same thing you are experiencing happened to me

Thanks for everyone's input.  It's much appreciated.

After uninstalling Shark007 and updating to the latest PinballX and LAV software, the problem has seemingly disappeared.

I left the cabinet in attract mode overnight and it hasn't locked up yet.  I also went through all 433 tables and played them one by one with no lockups.

So far so good. :)
