Getting arcade working... Please, for the love of god, help

Alright, so so far Mame32 is the only arcade emulator I can get to work properly. I've tried using Zinc (including 2 different frontends for it), I've tried using the model 2 emulator, I've tried using nebula, I've tried using Kawaka, & I have to tell you I'm growing incredibly frustrated. I've been building & programming computers for over 10 years - I don't think arcade emulation should be this much of a hurdle.

Anyways, I have all the roms in the path "C:\Gaming\Emulation and ROMs\ROMs, Arcade", I tried moving Samurai Shodown to the "C:\roms" folder (thought perhaps there was a long filename confliction) - that didn't work. No matter what I do, most of these emulators just do not read the roms. Mame32 is the only one that is seeing the ROMs. I do not have the roms zipped, they are unzipped & I have tried seeing if perhaps that was the problem - again, no solution. I also did not change any of the rom folder names.

Folks, I've been working really hard on this & I'd really like to get it working 1 way or the other. If I can't use my GameEx frontend to play these games - so be it, I'd much prefer using GameEx, I love it, but at this point I just want the thing to be working. As always, any feedback would be highly appreciated & thanks in advance.

OK, First, GameEx does not support Nebula and Kawaks for arcade games. I believe Samurai Showdown is a Neo Geo game, and that runs under MAME fine. I suspect you have out of date games to the version of MAME your using. If you turn off the Verify option under Advance MAME settings, yourll likely get the Neo-Geo games show up. Yourll need to update the list again. Zinc and Model 2 emulator don't play any games that MAME doesn't, only that it runs them a little better. Model 2 is easy to setup in GameEx. Zinc is a little tricky but a search of the forum should help. Again to get the Model 2 and Zinc to work your'l have to update the list again.

EDIT: PS: You need a beer ;)

To play NEOGEO games you need the NEOGEO bios first of all. Also many diffrent roms require several other roms to run. example you cannot play ultimate mortal kombat 3 with out having mortal kombat 3.

I recommed you find a rom burner pay the 25 dollars for the DVD sets and have everything you need.

It does take some time to learn how to configure but its worth it..dont get discourged.

have fun

Any chance of adding support for Kawaka? It's possible it's my version of samurai shodown but the thing is, I also have a marvel vs street fighter game & that runs fine in kawaka, it doesn't work at all in mame32 (bypassed gameex, I tried it directly) & I have no clue if I have zinc set up right. I think that is a zinc game but there's not so much documentation on it so it's a needle in a haystack looking for answers. Perhaps an FAQ in the forums would help out others in the future.

I did try searching the forums; Again, needle in a haystack, however, from what I was able to find out, I changed the zinc options to

--renderer=.\renderer.znc --use-renderer-cfg-file=.\renderer.cfg --controller=.\controller.znc --use-controller-cfg-file=.\controller.cfg

I also am using the d3d/ogl renderer (set to ogl atm) (GeForce 6600GT 128mb AGP card), anything else need to be set up for it?

Didn't need them for Kawaka to run, I have to have that for ZiNc/Mame32?

Alot of games say "(set 1)" & "(set 2)". If I have just "(set 1)", it should still work okay right?

I have no idea what you are referring to. What DVD sets would I buy?

I'm not a quitter. The funny part about this is I'm busting my butt to get this thing working & there are only a small handful of these things I'll actually play. I more or less do this for the kids & company.

Thanks again for your feedback guys. Please let me know anything else I may need to.

You really would be ahead to find a burner who will put all components together for you. They are all over the place, and it saves a ton of time and headaches. Just my opinion, but that is what I did in the beginning until I learned all the lovely nuances that each system has...

Hey Marker,

I noticed your Zinc config options... looks like you may have gotten them from one of my posts... anyway, keep in mind that there is a additional component to Zinc for the controller (Winterblast's plugin I believe) It is yet another download that IIRC is not included with some releases of Zinc.

Try not to get too frustrated. Zinc is a PITA to get set up but once it is running properly you'll love it. Games that have unplayable framerates in MAME32 seem to run silky smooth in Zinc; so the trouble is definately worth it. I personaly use the D3D renderer as for some reason I could never get the ogl one up and running.

Also, I have Samurai Showdown 1 through 5 working perfectly in MAME32. I also have Marvel vs Capcom and Marvel vs Street Fighter working in MAME32 so if you are having trouble with those games you may just need to update the roms.

Dude, I've searched over 3 different torrent search engines & on the net, I can't find them. I've found some but nothing I would classify as "complete".

I downloaded whatever was on the ZiNc site, I have no clue where else to go, how would I? I don't mean to sound unappreciative but this is just absolutely-$*'in-ridiculous. Why has no ever just put together everything a person would need for these emulators to work? Why is that so difficult?

Matter fact, that's EXACTLY what I think I'm going to do as soon as I get this working. I'm going to take all the stuff a person needs for the emulators to work & make an installer for them, because this is just profoundly frustrating & what's even more frustrating is that it's so unneccessary. An installer is so easy to make.

Look, if someone can please just help me get this thing going, I'll gladly make an installer & throw it on filefront or some place. No ROMs of course (unless they're legal) but everything you need to make the emulators function properly. Perhaps an FAQ & of course, a disclaimer for all the creators of the various emulators, this way everyone's happy.

For now though, what is *everything* I need to make ZiNc work?

Alright... I'll do the best I can here. Attached to this post is my Zinc folder zipped up complete with plugins and a config file (no roms). Unzip it and put it somewhere on you computer.

Also attached is a zip folder called pr1data. Inside that folder is a file called pr1data.8k. Put the pr1data.8k file in the root of your C: drive. If you put it anywhere else it wont work. (C:\pr1data.8k)

Now look in your c:\program files\gameex\config folder for a file called gamex.ini

Use notepad to open the file and look for the following section:

# The following settings are used if you wish to use the Zinc Emulator

# (http://www.emuhype.com/)

# for launching games based on the 3D SONY Playstation

# hardware instead of MAME.

# The Zinc Emulator runs these games much better than MAME, and most

# will run full speed with full sound on modern hardware.

# Zinc use should appear seemless in GameEx

# and the games will appear as normal in the lists. The game has to be at

# least partially supported by MAME, to appear in the list, and the ROMS

# must be in the MAME ROM Directory specified above.

# Therefore don't specify the --roms-directory option in ZincOptions.

# Note: ZincPath should not include the EXE, just the full path to where

# Zinc is located. Specify the EXE in ZincEXE.

(use the settings below and modify the zincpath to suit your setup)

UseZinc=True

ZincEXE=ZiNc.exe

ZincPath=d:\Zinc

ZincOptions=--renderer=.\renderer.znc --use-renderer-cfg-file=.\renderer.cfg --controller=.\controller.znc --use-controller-cfg-file=.\controller.cfg

This is exactly how I have zinc setup and it works perfectly for me.

Also, keep in mind that if you can't launch a rom in Mame it won't work in zinc either. Here is a list of zinc games. Try to launch the game in mame first. If it pukes there it's going to puke in zinc as well

I figured out the reason why some of these ROMs weren't working is because I was missing some of the files out of the zips, alot of which were just the BIOS for ZN1, ZN2, or woteva. It's possible I had ZiNc setup right from the beginning but without testing it out (which I still haven't done) I won't be sure. I do plan on testing it out in the near future but I'm more focused on this "paving the way" for new users idea; Meaning, currently I'm doing alot of research into clrmame. I'm hoping there's a way for this program to be able to insert the BIOS into ROMs missing them.

I don't plan on doing just an installer. I plan on doing an entire guide to help people understand what it is they need & why they need it. I'm also hoping to include information on how to build an authentic MAME ROM database, meaning there are alot of ROMs out there that are labeled MAME ROM but are actually not a MAME ROM at all. The Samurai Shodown ROM is a perfect example of that. I've been able to download that ROM from at least 5 different places & every single one of them is exact same file, unfortunately it's not a MAME ROM. It's a Neo Geo ROM which I do have working perfectly on Neo Rage but it doesn't work in MAME or Kawaka because it's not a MAME ROM.

Anyways, needless to say there's alot of research to be done here. Once I have a release ready I may put up some forums either here or on gamingforums (know some people there). I'd prefer it here but I'm not sure if Mr. Spiers is for it, either way, it's not something I'm going to look to make happen until there's a release ready.
