Hi there,

I've done some research and I can't seem to find any answers to my questions.

I'm trying to clean up the start menu on GameEx Arcade Edition to my liking and I can't seem to figure it out. I'd like to remove some items like Exit, Genres etc..I know how to do it in GameEX standard. I'd either like to be able to clean Arcade Edition up, or possibly use Logos for the main Titles like Arcade Edition has, but in main GameEx. Either way would be fine.

Please help!

Thanks!

-Wade

Is anyone out there that can help with my question? I want to keep using GameEx because I like the software, but the documentation is vague when it comes to customizing menus and themes. I need a little direction or I may have to move on to something else.

Thanks.

There is no documentation for skinning or otherwise customizing the menu or theme for Arcade as it is not programmed to be modified as easily as standard GameEx. That said, if you know what files to modify you can customize the appearance somewhat, but it is something that the more skilled member would have to experiment.

Ok. Thanks for your reply. I'm very experienced with editing ini and silimar files of that nature. If you give me a hint as to which files you're referring to, i'll be happy to see what I can come up with and also document my progress.

Thanks

You will be modifying the gameex.ini and theme.ini files. High level order of operation below:

- Copy the contents of the default theme folder into a new folder (name it what you will).

- Open the gameex.ini file located in \GameEx Arcade Edition\CONFIG and modify the theme=default to theme=the name of your theme folder from the previous step. Save the change.

- Open the theme.ini file from the folder you created previously. Here you can edit the TrueType font to display. I find that there is a narrow range of fonts that display well with Arcade so defaulted to SegoUI as my choice.

- While there are different baackground image files that come with the Default theme for Arcade, the only one that will make a difference in replacing is the bak.mp4 video. I have put in a request to be able to customize these for each system being run through Arcade. Here is a list of the files I have found that can be personalized in Arcade:

Within the \MEDIA folder:
AutoUpdate1.png
bak.mp4
bak.png
ControlPanel.png
dialog.png
errordialog.png
pleasewait.png
pleasewaitbar.png
all of the .wav and .ogg files

all of the .png files in the \MEDIA\LOGOS folder

I hope this is of help to get you started.

I had the same question but I'm not willing and expert has you for configuring gameex.  From what I can understand so far (couple of days of research, is if you go with Arcade Edition, you should not try to modify too much stuff.

There isn't all that much to modify, and my modification attempts have been hit and miss. Modifying or creating custom menus as such is not possible as AE uses a flat menu structure for simplicity (unless Tom allows for Custom Menus and just hasn't spilled the beans about it ;) ).

That, i think is the whole point of GX.AE - it's GX 'Streamlined'. For those that just want to get on with it.

Edit - "it" being emulation, playing, competing etc. Beating your girlfriends highscore and making such a big deal out of it that she bitchslaps you round the face and tells you that if she was your mother, she would make you go to school in your underpants.
