hansolo77
This month's bonus game is Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. It was suggested back in March 2016 by @Draco1962 and finally voted as the 2nd best option in September's round of voting., Thanks for the suggestion Draco1962, and enjoy this game everybody else! Michael Jackson's Moonwalker is the name of several video games based on the 1988 Michael Jackson film Moonwalker. U.S. Gold published various games for home computers, released in 1989, whilst Sega developed two similarly themed beat 'em up video games in 1990; one released for arcades and another released for the Mega Drive/Genesis and Master System. Each of the games' stories loosely follow the story of the film, in which Michael Jackson must rescue kidnapped children from the evil Mr. Big, and incorporate synthesized versions of the musician's hits, such as Beat It and Smooth Criminal. The games, particularly the Genesis adaptation, have achieved cult status. Different from the home computer version, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (マイケル・ジャクソンズ・ムーンウォーカー Maikeru Jakusonzu Mūn'wōkā?) is an arcade video game by Sega (programming) and Triumph International (audiovisuals), with the help of Jackson which was released on the Sega System 18 hardware. This game suffered from Sega's suicide battery[2] on its arcade board (a battery that, accidentally or otherwise, renders the game unplayable at the end of its lifespan). The arcade has distinctively different gameplay from its computer and console counterparts, focusing more on beat 'em up gameplay elements rather than platform. Mame Offender
I got good at this one from a previous Competition. I hope to hit 100k eventually!! 78380
hansolo77
I can't wait to try this one out. I think we may have rented it for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, but that was a long time ago. Doesn't really matter though, because according to the wiki entry, the 2 games are only similar by name. I a bigger fan of these beat-em-up games than I am of the shoot-em-up games we mostly have in our competition. That's why I was so excited to play the July 2015 GOTM "The Punisher" It's funny, nobody even officially updated the OP to say who the winner was with the RED LETTERS. That's gonna change now! Mame Offender
Wth?! Where was everyone for this fun Sega title?? It came out right in the midst of the Beat em up era. It is a ton o fun if you give it a chance. The isometric view was cool at the time it came out. There is strategy for the attack button. Hmm. Oh well. hansolo77
I feel ya MO. I don't know why nobody played this one. I know times are tough and nobody has time to play. But somebody can squeeze a little time right? Maybe they just don't like this game. Maybe Michael Memories are still to raw? The games not going anywhere so it'll still be here after the month is over!
ExedExes
As I said in the Track & Field thread, a lot was going on for me this month, plus we played this earlier this year at the Yolympics and I needed a break from the constant grinding I did for this game on Team Verizontal. This score falls a little short of what I got in the competition but is good for now. ExedExes - 151,
Mame Offender
Wow, that is a very good score for this one, considering the highest you can possibly score is somewhere in the 230k range.
hansolo77
Judging from MO's reaction, that's an awesome score EE! I hope to get my own score posted on here soon for this. Looks like a fun game. Updated OP, DB, RSS
Mame Offender
I'm trying to get to 100k, it's tougher than it looks! I'm starting to figure out its all about where to position Michael to get far in this game. I have being noticing that there are safe spots to migrate to. It's hard to remember all of them though. Just shy of 100k. 96,750 MO

rtkiii
I remember this game in the arcade way back in the day...but I honestly do not remember it being so cheesy. Here is my first and probably last one. 40,

Mame Offender
I don't know why more guys aren't playing this one. It's a lot of fun when you dig into it. The gameplay is really cool. Graphics are great. I don't get it. Is everyone putting a boycott on it because of who the Game represents? If you look past the title, it is a cool as heck beat em up game! A little bump upwards... 100,
hansolo77
The going theme for excuses (according to my previous poll) stems from lack of time to play. I think there's more to it than that, like when there IS time to play, nobody wants to play RETRO games. And take it a step further by saying if you have the time to play and want to play RETRO, you're probably not interested in playing anything in the high score competition because of 1) the games are too hard or 2) the ability to gain a significant placement on the boards requires greater skill than they're capable of. This seems to fit my own personal flow chart as well. I've been so busy with other things, I've not had time to play. When I do, it's usually not something RETRO. When I am feeling retro, I'll play something else rather than compete for a high score. I dunno why, it just seems like there's other things getting in my way, and I'm typically just interested in playing games I'm familiar with or had previously (or currently) owned. I'm starting to try new things, and if anything this HS competition is definitely helping to improve my exposure to them. Personally, I don't think it has anything to do with Michael Jackson. Rumors and politics aside, MJ was a pretty cool guy. He just sorta lost it later in life, but in the mid to late 80's and early 90's, he really was the King of Pop. I wish I got to meet him, or at least be at one of his concerts. His music and videos were awesome, especially Moonwalker. The game is campy and cheesy, but it fit the targeted audience perfectly, and only MJ could get away with it. When he passed away, something special died with him. His legacy still lives on though. I myself am ashamed I've not played this yet. If it's any consolation, I played the MJ slot machine at the casino... Mame Offender
I know, not everyone is retro. As for me, I'm 100% Retro. There's nothing else out there that holds a shred of value to me. None of em. I need my MAMe v122 with my two control panels and a laptop. Nuttin' else. Why do you think I have been around here consistently for 3 years? This site was Godsend. It revolves around over hundred wicked Retro gems! It's a blast putting scores up and competing. Hopefully some gamers can squeeze a game in here and there and get rolling again. As for MJ, damn right he's the King of Pop. He captivated people with his voice, moves, sounds, you name it. He was the Beatles of his time. hansolo77
LOL!!! Man I suck at this game.. It wouldn't be so bad if your had a range attack (like when in robot form). All the enemies are ranged, and some of them require more than 1 hit kills. It is a fun game though. Just feel bad I didn't get a score submitted when it was peak submission time.
