Hi

I had been using a veeeery old version of GameEx (somewhere in the 3.xx release) on my cabinet for quite awhile with no problems. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago, the computer that runs my cab died, so I've had to buy a replacement. Since I was replacing the hardware, I decided to upgrade to the latest version of GameEx. Wow, a lot has changed. Because of the massive amounts of changes, I have a couple of questions that I can't seem to figure out:

1. How do I change/set an "intro" opening movie? I thought it used to be you put a movie called logo.mpg somewhere and it would be called automatically when GameEx started, but I can't remember now (and I don't have my old machine anymore to check what I used to do). Can I define multiple intro movies?

2. How do I get rid of the News category that's in the default start menu?

I probably have a couple more questions, but I'm at work now and not in front of the machine and these are the only ones I can remember off hand.

Thanks and excellent work!

under the configuration options is a section that will allow you to enable/disable most of the options on the menu and make it look more arcade like. it is simply called enable/disable features.

Regarding the intro movie, my tron background is named bak.MPG and is located in the MEDIA folder of the theme. I suppose putting a bak.MPG file in the MEDIA folder of your theme or default - default will act as your intro movie. You may have to make sure intor movie is enabled in the configuration.

Thanks for the reply.

I looked under the Enable/Disable Features and I didn't see an option to remove News. Is it hidden somewhere else?

Re: the intro movie, I tried putting it in the theme folder I'm using (the default) under Media, but should it have a specific name (intro? logo?). Can the file format be anything (AVI, MOV, MPG)?

One other thing I noticed--is there an option to not sort games that begin with 'The'? I'd rather have Legend of Kage under L, than T(he Legend of Kage).

Thanks!

AVI or MPG, no MOV support. Actually the intro movie is pretty poorly implemented as is. In fact, the whole media player for GameEx, although awesome in that you do not need to leave GameEx, is poor. I have opted to use Media Player Classic as a launch before program with a command line that puts my video as full screen and closes it when done. its /play /fullscreen /close. easy. It can play anyformat, including streaming or MOV or Real or DivX or anything.

The option to play movies from GameEx is located... somewhere, I forgot where and have been looking for it for two days now. I have the video playing twice :(

Sucky part about using external play is it cannot cancel the player at keypress (yet). But I might find a way as MPC is very full featured.

It comes with many codec packs that can be found at free-codecs.com I use k-lite standard. it is the most complete/useful.

Although I don't fully agree with you on the internal Media Player for GameEx (which as far as I know is just WMP object anyway which uses the WMP engine). I have a command line alternative that I have compiled that uses the WMP10 COM object so it's just WMP10 but it has true full screen (exclusive mode), exit using ESC and automatically exits after the media has finished playing. It also has the standard WMP10 context menu if you need it. If you *have* to use an external player, I'd recommend you use this one.

1. This is setup under multimeida/htpc, in the configuration and you either point to a full path for a video file or a directory to play a random video (AVI, MPEG, and WMV are supported).

2. Go into the news in the configuration and turn off the first setting.

Fresh_Oil I dont believe its implemented that badly, it did used to be, but I don think so anymore. Maybe your using an old version or something, or last tried it with an old version. As Headkaze says it uses the WMP Engine (but not the object).

1. Holy crap I didn't even notice the 'Next Page' option. Wow. Anyhow, I tried both ways (path and specific file) and it didn't play. Ok, I just tried enabling the "Videos" option and I set the Videos path to the path that has my intro movie and I tried playing it and the screen went black. Eventually, GameEx came back and it said, Times Played: 1. But I've been able to play both the MOV and the AVI that are in this directory, outside of GameEx. Is this leading me to the ffdshow path? I checked the logfile and I don't see any errors related to running videos (and it has 'Playing startup video' in the logfile).

2. Found it. Thanks.

Thanks!

Something I just noticed:

--Player 3's move right command is mapped to the letter L. If player 3 moves right (or the letter L is typed on the keyboard), this pauses the current game and then shows the GameEx Player Controls screen for that particular game. Pressing right again exits that screen and returns you to the game.

Is that an option somewhere in GameEx? I'd like to disable that.

Thanks.

Another thing that has happened:

--On the default GameEx 'start' screen, if I use my mouse and move between categories too repeatedly/often (back and forth between two categories several times), eventually the 'select' sound goes away. Sound is not gone entirely, if I press either mouse button I get the default GameEx mouse button sound and my games have sound. But the only way to get back the 'select' sound is to restart GameEx.

I updated to the latest today, btw so I'm at 6.31. I still can't find an option that launches the GameEx 'controller help' screen (see previous post). Am I missing something again?

Thanks.

I found this option. I disabled it, but I'm still getting this help screen. I think my wiring is goofy on the 3rd player so I'll take a look there.

I said this because my intro movie is extremely pixelated and presented at a very strange resolution. Sorry, I shouldn´t have worded it thus, it could be my settings. I cannot figure out why a high resolution video would display thusly in gameEx but just fine in MPC. It also seems to be rather slow, especially on loading and it skips when playing MP3's. I would blame this on my system but I can't see how... its not a speed or memory problem and both videos and MP3s load quickly and smoothly in MPC. Same goes for DVD's.

Another video related question, I use MPC because it seems faster and more complete than any other video player. I can play any format, VCD DVD RM MOV WMP MPG AVI DIVX XVID ... you name it. What is the reason for using WMP engine if it is slow (opinion) and limited to certain file types. Or isn't it?

I found the problem with the startup video not playing. I had two movie files that I couldn't get to play. Both were MOV. I switched to MPGs and now the videos play properly when I startup GameEx. I guess GameEx doesn't like the MOV format?
