I don't understand what would change if I did that.

Where does GameEx read the list of files I have inside my Roms directory? Does it scan the directory itself or does it read from a db or xml file somewhere?

The same thing has happened to my NES which I also use Mame64.exe to play. These both work if I address them in the command line (DOS)

Hi Dal,

Here is what you logfile says happened when you ran Donkey Kong Country (USA):

cmd.exe /c C: mame64.exe snes -rompath "C:\Emulators\_Roms\SuperNES" -cart "Donkey Kong Country (USA).avi"

In other words, GameEx attempted to run a video file and not a rom file. I would not have expected that since your rom filter for SNES is set to *.zip;*.srm;. Please check the Donkey Kong Country (USA) zip file and let us know what files are actually in there.

I was also wondering if you would mind providing another more simple example. Could you try a game that is not using the zip format, post that logfile, and let us know what game it is?

As a side note, I have not used mame64 as a console emulator and I was unable not find a list of command line arguments that contained the -cart flag. Are you pretty confident that the command Line structure you have set up in GameEx is valid? this is what you have listed:

mame64.exe snes -rompath "[rompath]" -cart "[romfile]"

As for using a dedicated SNES emulator, as long as YOU know that mame64 can be used to run SNES games using a command line, then you certainly can do that. Personally, I use dedicated emulators because I felt that the result would likely be as good as it possible or there might be some feature that I really wanted. On a side note, I do think it is a little easier to troubleshoot dedicated emulators since they are isolated to one system, but not by much. :)

Another thought...I am wondering if this could be a GoodMerge related issue where the zip file contains a bunch of files (including roms AND videos) and the user is not a registered GameEx user. I wonder what file GameEx would attempt to run in that case...

RedDog, I'm confident with the Mame64 commands as I've been working with another chat group to help me get this up and running :)

Its apparently exactly the same as MESS but you address it as "mame64.exe" as they merged. I like having the mame emulator doing all of my stuff except N64 which apparently it doesn't hold up too well with.

As far as donkey kong country goes.. I thought that was a pre-packed thing with GameEx (if I look in the demo folder I see them 4 titles there but with no Roms so I assume they are set to just "show" you the game).

I have approximately 780 games sitting in my SuperNES folder, I find it strange that it would have identified for popular titles out of all of them. I can't show you a log of another one as the problem is that I can't get them on the list for GameEx to execute (this is my whole problem).

My collection has 99% .zips and a dozen .srm files

Donkey Kong Country (U) (V1.2) [!].srm is one of them.

Here's the rest of the srm files only

ActRaiser (U) [!].srm
AD&D - Eye of the Beholder (U) [!].srm
Civilization (U) [!].srm
Donkey Kong Country (U) (V1.2) [!].srm
Donkey Kong Country 2 - Diddy's Kong Quest (U) (V1.1) [!].srm
Dragon View (U) [!].srm
Earthbound (U) [!].srm
Emmitt Smith Football (U).srm
F-ZERO (U) [!].srm
Secret of Mana (U) [!].srm
Sim City (U) [!].srm
snes
Super Mario Kart (U) [!].srm
Super Mario World (U) [!].srm
World League Soccer (U) [!].srm

Inside the zips I have (after checking few of them out) there is just 1 file named the same as the zip but with a smc extension (not srm!)

I don't know what else to share but let me know if you want me to try anything.

Cheers

James

I'm wondering if GameEx is hanging on to the emulator cache for the demo settings. You can force GameEx to rebuild the cache files for an emulator by deleting the 'cache' files in the GameEx\Data directory. Try going into that directory and entering EMU_2*.*cache into the search field. You can delete any of the results that are returned. Next start up GameEx (which will now be forced to rebuild your cache files), and see whether this resolves your list issue.

Also just out of curiosity, where do you have GameEx installed?

Thanks nullPointer

I've just followed everything that gameEx suggested so C:\GameEx for GameEx and C:\Emulators for all the Emulators which I also included _Roms and _Artwork to keep everything nice a neat :)

I cleared the cache files and started GameEx. No problems but when I tried to open Nintendo SNES folder to see there were any Roms, it entered and kicked me straight back out. I've left it a while before trying again while I worte this post...

...

I've gone back to see that it has actually allowed me in to the folder except there's nothing in there. I can hear the click/tap of my menu selection changing but I can't see where it is and the menu with change view and back is missing too!

There's just these details:

All Games

8,149 Items

5 | 11

I tried to see if I could start a hidden game but when I pressed to start it (twice) it moved the screen back over to my Mame arcade Roms collection?!

Very strange :s

Here's an example of command line that executes the game Zombies Ate My Neighbors which I played for 478 seconds. The Roms work, GameEx currently doesn't lol

C:\Emulators\Mame166>mame64.exe snes -rompath "C:\Emulators\_Roms\SuperNES" -cart "C:\Emulators\_Roms\SuperNES\Zombies Ate My Neighbors (U) [!].zip"Average speed: 100.00% (478 seconds)

Here's the updated:

Command Line: mame64.exe snes -rompath "[ROMPATH]" -cart "[ROMPATH]\[ROMFILE]"

If Zombies Ate My Neighbors (U) [!].zip worked, then one would expect Donkey Kong Country (USA).zip to work in the same way (assuming there are no issues with that specific game for that emulator). I would suggest you try running a bat file outside GameEx to confirm that it works.

Otherwise, I have to admit that I have no more ideas for now. Hopefully nullPointer or another knowledgeable soul can offer some useful suggestions...

This part is very strange. If Windows Explorer is being weird about granting access to your ROMs directory, it's a pretty sure bet that GameEx won't be able to access it. Are there any permissions set on the directory which might be preventing access? (Right Click on the Directory > Properties > Security tab) What happens if you run GameEx as Administrator? (i.e. right click on the executable and select Run As Administrator)

Wanna try another experiment? Create a new directory, copy a single ROM over to it, configure GameEx to use that as your ROM directory, and see if that makes a difference when you run GameEx.

I might have had a clue if there was proper documentation to this programs UI.

As far as that goes, the wiki is a good place to start, although admittedly there's not much documentation in terms of the interface for the frontend itself.

Did you try using an alternate ROM folder (purely as an experiment mind)? I'm just trying to pin down whether there's an issue with the directory or there's still something else going on. I'm also wondering whether the fact that the directory starts with a non-alphanumeric character might be having an impact.

I've spent some time setting up another front end (emulation station) to see if I could get it working in there. I've had to write a batch script so I can record issues with getting the commands to work (emulation station issue) but one things for certain the roms loaded as soon as I told it where they were located in emulation station. I can't understand why GameEx would have a problem with the path but I'll do that now for the sake of trying.

Cheers

I've setup snes9x.exe which is a very simple install. I've gone through the GameEx GUI and navigated to SNES Test and pressed to enter into that screen.

It let me in the first time and done exactly the same as before (no roms listed) then kicked me out after a few seconds and now i can't get back in to that screen. For the record I've reset the theme back to default - new to make sure there wasn't a theme issue going on.

Yeah man I have to admit I'm a bit stumped on this one. Just to recapitulate though (especially since we jumped to the next page), within GameEx you can see an entry for SNES in your emulators list, but when you attempt to view the games it's an empty list. Does that all sound right?

The only other thing I might suggest is to try temporarily removing your ROM filter to see if it makes a difference.

You could also build a map file which would (or should) force the issue, but to be honest I'd rather figure out why it's not working in the conventional sense.

Hey before moving on would you mind posting your log file for the run in which GameEx booted you from the game selection screen?

Well thanks for your patience Dal1980. I'm really at the point where I'm just taking shots in the dark based on what I would do in this situation. Does the same thing happen if you change to a different view? The list based view is the most straight forward, so I would suggest trying that one. If you've not done this before it's simply a matter of clicking the change view a few times. If you're in a "icon based" view (as in the video) you'll want to click the icon that looks like a computer monitor displaying stars. If you're in a "text based" view it will simply say <Change View>. You may need to change views a few times to find the list based view.
