I wouldn't buy one in the hope of improving gaming. All emulators that I know of will run stretched and some emulators won't even run at a widescreen resolution, as the original games weren't designed for widescreen. You may find the odd commercial PC game with widescreen support, but not many, although I am out of touch.

Ok, so what if one desides to buy a large, say, 48-inch widescreen HD tv for MCE and TV/Movies.. Would GameEx support this? IE; would it put black bars on the left/right side for 4:3 mode?

GameEx supports it and always has, we were talking about emulators.

I have a Dell 2005FPW widescreen LCD monitor. It has three different scaling options in the on-screen menu for handling resolutions lower than its native resolution. The three options are 1:1, aspect, and fill.

1:1 will usually have a black border around all of the edges of a low resolution image. 640x480 will appear as a small image in the center of the monitor with black surrounding it.

Aspect scales the image as large as possible without changing the aspect ratio. 640x480 will fill the screen vertically leaving black bars on the right and left sides.

Fill will stretch the image to fill the whole screen. 640x480 will appear streched horizontally.

If you can find a monitor with similar settings you may be able to configure it to work the way you want.

i've a 20" widescreen lcd, and the emulators' stretching dont bother too much, except for Gameboy games.

you couldnt possibly take a screeny of say SNES games on widescreen could you im intrested to see what it looks like and also because i was lookin for 19"- 20" tft. i think mame has blacked out sides on widescreen, could be wrong though,

thanks for all your help :D

I have several 20 + screens, and everything looks fine. Although, with LCD, it is not as sharp or clean as I would like, such as a plasma..I am going to try it on a 30" and see what happens next! Don't forget, too, that a video card settings make a difference too!

So when I save up the money.. what kind of TV should I buy? LCD, Plasma, projection?

LCD sucks..think laptop. That is the exact type of screen it is. Plasma is still expensive as hell, but is excellent quality.

Personally, I would go with a monitor. The difference between a monitor and a television, is that a TV has a tuner. With satellite, you don't need a tuner.

For example, I was looking at a Toshiba 57" monitor (remember, no tuner in it) for $800.00 bucks. The same model, with tuner, was $2500.00.

Also, remember your CABLES make a huge difference. (e.g. composite is important for true HD, s-video is lower grade quality, followed by RCA jacks)

if your thinking of using a wide screen for mame you can add the aspect setting in the command line.

screen_aspect 16:9

I'm using it to squash my mame games into the correct aspect on my widescreen TV.

you can define the aspect to be anything on the command line eg 4:3 18:9 etc, etc.

Wow only $800 bucks? Thats a nice difference from $2500. I was looking at 42 inch tv's for $1700 or so. Because of that cost, I was going to hold back on buying anything for a while. My most recent display buy was a Samsung SyncMaster 930b (19-inch LCD /w 12ms response time). I got that for my desktop computer. It was around $350 new. I don't know what they are now, but I doubt they've come down much. Where did you find a tunerless monitor at 57-inches and under $1k? I would definately be looking into that too since I use my MCE box and cable for tuner. If I don't have cable I'd use an antenna, yet still going into the box. Hmmm.. the possibilities. :)

I found it at a Sears near me. Normally, it goes for about 1400.00, but I asked the manager (never hurts to ask!) when he thought there might be a sale. He said they were going to move out a newer version, and the price would drop on the one I was looking at. I made sure to leave a number with him (as I am there quite a bit) and told him to call me when he knew it was going to drop. He did, and away I went! As soon as the big boys introduce a newer item (in this case a 60", they want to move old product). Get to know some of these guys, as they really can help a fella out!

I should also add, without HD capability, the xbox 360 is really not worth it. With an HD monitor, wow!! Really cool, but those games can never compare (in my mind) to the good ol' tried and true games!!

One more thought...Don't forget to ask about floor models. I saved a grand on my last TV when I asked if I could buy the floor model, since they were out of stock. The manager said "no problem," and gave me a great deal!
