Hi,

Is there an option to have gamex reload / relaunch itself from one of the menus or custom menus? ie. close itself and just reload.

Thanks

Sorry, no... not that I am aware of, but maybe something for the Featere Request thread. Question is, why would you do this? GameEx only restarts itself, after a update, which makes sense.

The reason is when updating or changing video snaps or game roms. I'm on a real cabinet without mouse and keyboard,

It would just be handy to have the option to reload itself to apply the changes.

But GameEx does this automagically after a update or a update list, where is the problem?

If I have the cab loaded and running gameex... Then I scroll down the game lists and realise that a video snapshot is missing or a box cover is missing, I can rename the missing / incorrect files or add them in real time over the LAN.

Gameex doesn't recognise the change until it has been restarted.

For me to restart my arcade cabinet, I have to exit gameex, plug in a mouse, reload gamex and remove the mouse.

It would just be handy to have the option to relaunch gamex from the exit menu. This is also true when making changes to gameex themes.

The update list option as far as i can see only appears for MAME and not for snes, nes, amiga, spectrum etc.... and doesn't make gameex find new artwork, videos etc... unless i'm wrong?

Thats expected behavior unfortunately.

You have a couple options here. You could restart the cabinet and have a startup program like GameExLaunch that launches Gameex for you on startup, or just make a bat file.

Otherwise, thats gonna have to be a feature request. GameEx loads the snaps on a thread at startup, and the data isn't reloaded until GameEx is. I have gone to some lengths to update the data.db3 file manually in my own code to get around behavior like this.

Have you taken a look under External Applications within the Setup Wizard? There is a default External App called Close and Restart GameEx. You could probably create a batch file to run from that. Tom created an exe/bat file found under this thread, Download the zip file in the thread and extract the contents to c:\GameEx . It appears to work just fine so long as you modify the path to C:\GameEx...

Or, you could simply run GameEx from the following batch file commands using Notepad:

cd "c:\gameex\""c:\gameex\gameex.exe"call gameex.bat

Save the file as "gameex.bat" under your c:\gameex\ path and run the gameex.bat file instead of gameex.exe. Everytime you exit GameEx using the normal Exit it will reload GameEx. (credit to Tom under this thread) I edited his original batch file commands to fit the current default install path for GameEx for my entry above.

There is no need then to run an external command slot, however, despite being foolproof and actually works a little too well as you would have to either kill the CMD.exe or shut down the OS to get it to stop running!

Either way, problem solved as I see it.

Thanks for the responses.

I hadn't seen the external app for close / restart, i'll check it out as it sounds perfect. I'd looked at running gameex from a self re-loading bat but that would always reload gameex which ultimately may not be what I want.

Once again, great support!

The first one actually is the best of the two options. Let us know how it works for you and if you run into any hitches.
