Hi Guys,

just a quick question regarding updating our emulators, for example i used the build in emulator selection panel to install Dolphin and it installed 3.0, the latest version is like 4.01 or something how do i upgrade without messing up my current gameEX setup (as its running perfect!)

thanks a mill for the help.

I've upgraded quite a few emulators. All I've ever done is install them over the old one. As example:

I installed Stella (2600) in C:\Emulators\Stella

I just installed the upgrade to the same directory. Since the exe is the same it's just a matter of being sure the setup is preserved within the emulator(or set it up outside GameEx again). GameEx is already pointed at the emulator so nothing changes in that setup.

EDIT: I can't seem to spell lately... ;)

I do all my emulator upgrades manually, just to ensure I have the latest working version. Sometimes, the .exe file name can change slightly, so always double check your settings and make sure your file path is still pointing to the correct .exe. Like ClassicGMR said above, install your update to where your current emulator is and you should still be in good shape. :)

You can do it the way ClassicGMR and Riffman mention and it will work most of the time. However you are not bound to the directory's that GameEx creates. You can actually have the emulator wherever you like - just change the Working Path in the emulator settings to where your new .exe is. Also make sure in the Command Line section the .exe is named correctly. Some developers like to put the version number in the exe name for example: dolphin4.0.exe. In that case just alter the .exe portion of the command line to reflect that :)

i never upgrade the emulators unless i am running into issues. creates more work than it is worth. if you are upgrading just to upgrade, i would advise against it. especially with emulators like MAME where it can change the name of the rom sets. gets so annoying having to rename them.

my conclusion is, if you set it up as a standalone box, why upgrade when everything else works?

but if you have it in a media-center like configuration, double or triple check to make sure everything works after the upgrade is installed. sometimes having things upgraded is important for security reasons, etc. it all depends on how you use the machine.
