Side note: I'm more surprised that Tom finds it a rarity that people don't use Facebook. I don't think any of the staff does... Null for sure, Drac doesn't afaik, I don't, and I don't think HK does either? Not sure about Tempest or KRC, but contrary to popular belief I don't want to make it easy for the government to spy on me, or for naughty people to be able to easily steal my identity. I also don't care what you had for lunch today, or where you're going to get hammered after your crappy day at work. If I wanted to talk to ya, I'll call you. If I didn't know you that well before, why would I add you to my friends? I guess that's the hermit in me talking though. :-)

On topic: I'd way rather have the great people that are here now, all of who live and appreciate this marvelous FE, and are so happy to give back to the people that gave of themselves, than to be widely popular, hugely unappreciated, and widely criticized for not being another HS clone.

I love this community for what it is, not for what it could be if we push harder to sell it to the masses. :-)

I am on Facebook. Have less than 100 friends and, like Tempest, over 2//3 are family, the difference are friends, although I will be "unfollowing" a few of them because of the frequent banal posts and game requests and over sharing crap from other, other people's pages. The main thing for me is keeping in touch with family and a few people I have met over the years.

When my wife and I pulled out of Facebook, it was a great feeling. I think it's funny to see the reaction I get from people when they ask if they can add me and I tell them I don't use it. Is it really that hard to believe that I don't want to throw my personal info on the web fir the world to see? :-)

GameEx forum is as close as I'll ever get to sharing anything personal. :-)

I have a Facebook account but dont use it, I don't think I have made a post in a few years, kinda p****s me off how people share their life stories, I mean come on is their really any need. I think I originally used it for getting in contact with old school pal's but most of them now are just idiots.

In terms of the original post,

I do not think that GameEx is losing out at all, Nothing even comes close to the endless number of configuration possibilities, not to mention the dedicated staff with a vast knowledge of everything from coding to graphics and very regular updates from the gods. Hyperspin on the other hand, dont get me wrong is a nice piece of kit but with Hyperspin I always get the feeling that it's never going to be finished. I also feel that the GameEx community have a very strong bond with each other and it's a more pleasant place to be.

Not to mention the recent insertion of PinballX which seems to have had a great impact within the pinball emulation company and has had people convert to us from other software. Kudos to Tom for this great piece of software.

There are various themes with all resolutions available, I think GameEx is just missing those couple of definitive HD themes, something I think that will come and eventually blow people away, but I think all the theme's available are more than adequate and are underestimated.

I think that there are more people using GameEx than one tends to realise, I think that because it is so easy to setup, that once it is setup they only return with a possible bug or configuration issue, Hyperspin tends to be more popular and have more active users because of the vast amount of ongoing projects they have, without those project's I'm pretty sure it would be quiet.

Although I don't like being number two to HyperSpin sometimes, we do have such a good a thing going here. I wouldn't want it nuts like it is over there.

Number 2? Not in a million years. :P

I'm in the majority of members on here in that i don't use FaceFudge at all. I have an account, but only because Steam insisted i have one linked for the hardware beta participation - why? Who knows but that's the reason i have one and i've not logged in since i created it. I understand its intended use, and is probably invaluable for the people who use it to keep in touch with distant family and friends, but those people who have 400+ "friends" whom they've never met and don't see the irony in bragging about all these "friends" they have - well, good luck to em lol!

Back on topic i also don't think GE loses out - it is easily found through searches by anyone seeking out such a frontend - that's exactly how i arrived here and i hadn't heard of it before that time. Not to mention all the users that show it off to all their friends and family (and we all love to show it off don't we! ;) ).

I was recommended both HS and Maximus but was left unsatisfied. I went searching for my own choices and i can tell you it took me no more than one hour of installing GameEx to purchase a license and not because of the features it unlocks - because i wanted Tom to have my money! Here's why:

  • Ease of use - check. Clicking an arrow and browse boxes. ANYONE can do that.
  • Configurability - check. The amount of options still blows my mind today.
  • Customisation - check. Tons of themes and included editor. You can't give more than that.
  • Active and friendly community - check. Greatest place on the net with an active presence from Tom himself. Marvellous.

Know that i'm not sucking up or trying to brownose when i say this is the greatest place on the net. In the 15 or so years that i have had a presence online the GameEx forum is the only place i've ever made a virtual home. Ever. And i hope to be here for many years :)

In my eyes the mere fact that this place isn't crawling with thousands of people screaming for help is testimony to how good GE truely is. We have people here and there popping in with a lil hiccup or querey, to which they are promptly assisted by the Mods, Admins and helpful regulars, only to never be seen again. That says something! Doesn't it?!

As for being #2 to HS - stats aren't everything Tom, 1000 friends on FB? Pfft keep em :P

Like most of you, I've dabbled with multiple frontends over the years, when all is said and done, I put money towards this one. I like it. I just need to work on making it do what I want to, but like anything, that just takes time and patience :)
