I have had to reinstall window 7 after a major virus infection give to me by a Friend?, I saved the following folders before I wiped my HDD " CONFIG,DATA,DATS,DEMO,LOADERS,LOG,MAP FILES,MEDIA,PLUGINS,THEMES. I also saved the "Assets" folder from windows. Am I right in believing this would give me back my original setup?, and would I need to paste the ASSETS folder or is this covered by the above folders?.Regards a lover of GameEx. Also can Gamex be installed on an External drive?, I have a 3 terrabyte external one with all my Gamex stuff on it and plenty of room.

Ah yes, the old "I caught a virus from a 'friend' (or paid associate), and now I need a double-dose of penicillin" routine. Don't sweat it ... more than a few sailors on leave have run into this very thing. Oh wait you mean a computer virus ... gotcha. ;)

The normal advice here would be to copy over your entire GameEx directory and then simply re-install over the top of that.

Q: I'm wanting to move my GameEx install over to a new system. Can I just install GameEx on the new system, then copy my old GameEx folder over the new folder?

A: Yes, you can copy your directory over to the new system/location and then install over top of it. That should work fine. Note: you copy the folder first then install GameEx over the top.

Your situation deviates from that slightly in that it sounds like you don't have the entire original directory. Here's what I would do:

  1. Fresh Installation of GameEx
  2. Overwrite the appropriate directories using your backups
  3. Re-install GameEx over the top of that

Step 3 might be optional, but it would better conform to the "standard" M.O. for this operation.

Your question regarding your assets folder depends on what's in there. Is it stuff you want to keep?

The Assets folder contains all the artwork, carts, titles, videos,Box's,Snaps, etc. REgards

Yep sounds like you want to keep that! Just make sure you duplicate the assets path that you were using previously.

There shouldn't be an issue with installing GameEx to an external drive, just don't expect it to operate as a portable version (it won't work).

I have it in my old email folder but it wont let me open it says there is no prog to open it! regards

Uff da! I gotta be completely honest I'm not sure how well that bodes for your installation of Windows. Your registration key is simply a registry entry which should be recognized by Windows and run without issue. (We are talking about the file with the .gxkey extension right?) Short of that give this a whirl

Open the Start Menu and type regedit in the Search Programs and Files box

Open regedit.exe

Within regedit select File > Import ...

Navigate to your gxkey file and double-click

Hopefully the above should work. Are you using a stock standard installation of Windows or a Streamlined / nLited / other custom version?

Before we can effectively troubleshoot, you will need to upgrade to the latest version 13.20 as it has some enhancements and bug fixes. Please download and install it and provide us with a fresh log file if you are still encountering the same errors upon upgrade. Thanks!

And a PS: There's no crash here. Post a log after the crash occurs again (and you update your GameEx.exe). Thanks! ;)

And what is the deal with the log dates?

The next to last log shows at the end 00:23:09.3 09/12/2013

The last log shows 20:06:37.3 21/11/2013

Not so sure that something being reported in the same day should show such a discrepancy.

We may be dealing with multiple installs here... :-)

That was my thought. Could explain why the crashes are occurring. GameEx is confuzzled!

I would also like to mention that after a system wipe you should reinstall any video codecs you had - startup vids etc will likely cause issues otherwise. I've forgotten this step a few times in the past so trust me you will save yourself a  ;)
