am i getting the most out of my arcade monitor and mame using just the setting in gameex for arcadevga or am i better off using programs like avres or the mame resolution tool on the mamewah homepage? i am using a hantarex 25" monitor and most games look ok now but galaxians the top of the score is cut off and tweaking the settings on the monitor doesnt help the top is just cut off. also

i get in side scrolling games a ripple or scan line that is seen as you are moving left or right only and it moves from the bottom of the screen to the top but you cant see it if your guy is not moving. anyone ever have these problems?

thanks

To be honest sounds like your pretty much getting the most. As with the film with the same title, it's "As good as it gets". I've had two cabs with oldish monitors one was a hantarax, and the monitor just cant handle resolutions above 256 without stretching physically on the monitor. .This means most vertical games go off the screen. That's why I added the try to stretch to 256 option which makes the games fit on the screen, however means they don't run at the original resolution. I personally prefer now to have the games go off the screen a little.

In regards to horizontal games there's no need to put up with that. Under Advanced MAME settings in GameEx config, go to MAME options and make sure you have -tripplebuffer in there. That should solve it. If not post back.

thanks! that fixed the ripple in the side scollers by using tripplebuffer.

the other games like galaxians i can deal with .

Enabling triplebuffer is known to cause sound glitches in some games. I just modify the settings for those games specifically. I find that leaving triplebuffer on by default is preferable.

ok, so i can leave tripplebuffer on all games and edit the specific .ini for a game that sound stutters and turn tripple buffer off for that game? is there a easy way to find the name of the .ini for a specific game, they are not the same name as the game.

thanks

My personal preference is just to turn "Down" the emulation options for sound in all games.

Also MAME32FX has much better sound and its not such an issue with that build, if an issue at all.

well, i tried mame32fx and i get the same sound pops and crackles with that. i have tried all setting and the only it goes away is turn off triplebuffer i even turned the sample rate all the way down to where it sounds like its coming from a a/m radio still the same but i did notice that in mame32fx if i set the resolution to 640 x 288 galaxian centers perfect and the top is not cut off. thats running without gameex. but in game ex the top of galaxian is cut then if i turn off arcadevga in gameex it then displays fine? any ideas why? do i have to change a resolution setting in gameex .
