I wanted to get a little discussion going about some good choices for background music for PinballX, or for particular tables, since we have this feature. First person to suggest "Pinball Wizard" gets smacked.

What I'd really like to have is a sound sample of each table to play when it comes up on the selection wheel. Like a voice from the game, or a sample of the music; just a couple seconds long. Any suggestions on how to get or make such a recording?

I like abuse... PINBALL WIZARD!

<ducking now>

Seriously, not sure other than that obvious answer as it will be a matter of personal taste, memory of where they first played pinball, etc. So that being said, any matter of background sounds from arcade ambience to US "honkytonk" to skate rinks come to mind.

There is a site for the Arcade Ambience Project that has a slew of arcade recordings from the various decades. For short clips, I am sure that you could could probably utilize free .mp3 ring tones from various sites for your short clips or create your own with some of the freely available sound editing apps and the music from your personal collection.

Just be careful as references to or providing any content that may be protected by copyright law cannot be discussed in the forums.

I'd love to be able to lift some sound clips or music clips directly from the pin ROM... I suppose the same could be done by lifting the audio from a gameplay video of whatever table it happens to be. That might be easier, actually.

I'm gonna make some recordings... B)

I made a few sound clips from some of the popular pins to try out. I'll add them to the FTP later tonight.

Mostly just recorded the opening sounds & music and cut down to 10-30 seconds. I tried to capture the signature music and voices as best I could.

So far, I've done:

Attack From Mars

Scared Stiff

Cactus Canyon

Star Trek: TNG

Tales of the Arabian Nights

Medieval Madness

Just what I was looking for! :) Thanks, can't wait for the clips...

btw. Does anyone have a clue how to directly rip a music from the ROM file?

Added those I listed above to ftp > Media > Visual Pinball > Table Audio

I thought about putting a generic Table Audio folder in the Media directory, since these are not really exclusive to VP or FP, so that might still get done. Also, the Arabian Nights audio is fairly quiet. If anyone has an editor that can turn up the volume, please do so.

I'll keep working on adding more.

Hey Lyan , I forgot to say there is a really lot easier way to grab sounds & music from roms. You just need a some program.

If you do a search on VPF there is a tutorial for it. "Grabbing sounds from rom"

Thank you for your audio.

I turned up the volume on The Arabian Nights file, also run some cleaning and Normalizing the audio... anyway, you can download the file in Media > Visual Pinball > Table Audio > Tales of the Arabian Nights cut.wav (I can also convert it to mp3 if you like, just let me know).

I've added Medieval Madness (Williams 1997).wav (and mp3) - my version is slightly bit different from Lyanheart's, its contains music and voice quotes only without the actual gameplay sounds like the bouncers and ball hit sounds.

Of course, you can find it here:

Media > Visual Pinball > Table Audio > Medieval Madness (Williams 1997).wav

Media > Visual Pinball > Table Audio > Medieval Madness (Williams 1997).mp3

P.S. I don't know which files PinballX prefers tbh, so I've added both

Thanks for the help. I was going to re-do some of those anyway now that I have a better idea about how I would like them to sound but I don't have a good editor. Going to check in to the ROM-snatching, too.
