Hi All,


I have just installed gameEX on a new laptop and all is good accept everytime I start gameEX it loads Windows media centeralongside it.


Forum search came up with nothing and I am unable to find the setting to disable this in setup wizard.


Pulling my hair out here, any help would be much appreciated.

Seems to be detecting Media Center when running so therefor launches it on exit. Is the media center process running by chance at that time? Does task manager show any of the media center processes on startup?

Your right,

What happens is when I open GameEX it opens then quits into Windows media Center.

The only way to get GameEX to run is to run it within Windows media center but of course exiting it will make GameEX run it on exit.

I have deleted Windows media center as a default program for anything but its still insists on opening when I run GameEX.

Do you think this could be a media center issue?

Just dropbox and a .ahk file that I use for mapping joystick combinations to the ESC Key. For peace of mind the contents are below

So nothing to do with Windows media center there, below is a screenshot of my startup folder & running programs

As you can see windows media center is not running, it only starts when I run game EX, I dont want to uninstall windows media center but its starting to look like this may be the only answer.

Just to confirm, there is no option in GameEX that launches windows media center correct?

I wouldn't go so far as to nuke WMC from your installation just yet. If this was a wide-spread issue with GameEx, then anyone running Win 7 (and probably Vista) would probably have the same issue. I think you just need to dig deeper.

You started with task manager, but you have further to go down the rabbit hole. Have you identified all processes and services that are associated with WMC? It is possible that something has been reset within those to start Automatically and just needs to be stopped and changed to Manual.

The Black Viper site has a comprehensive list of services for your Windows 7 install. You will note from this page how and where to locate the services for specific applications and their default state. When making changes, be sure you are aware of any other dependencies before you disable any services. Also, do not use msconfig! It is far better to address application start issues via the services.msc (from the Start - Search field). Making changes to your services is an at your own risk activity so be sure to do your research before making any changes.

OMG Guys I sussed it.

I feel like a clown,

basically when I ran gameEX from the programs list I always typed "gameEX" in the windows search bar and 2 versions would always show, I thought it was peculiar but didnt go any further with it, see below

The one I was running was not normal GameEX but a version that runs in media center, see below shortcut link target

I must be half asleep, I cant believe I missed that for 2 days lol (The Icon did throw me off though as it should be green)

Anytime! Glad you got this one sorted out! You should be able to right-click on the shortcut, left-click on Properties, then click on Change Icon and point to the file in the \gameex folder to correct the icon that displays.
