Hi lionheart and welcome to the GameEx forums!

The first question I have for you is how comfortable do you feel with emulators in general? Specifically, how do you feel about running emulators directly from the command line? Choose one:

  1. I'm a command line wizard baby! My first name is MS and my last name is DOS! (interestingly enough my middle name is BASH ).
  2. What's a command prompt? What, you mean that little flashing line?! What am I supposed to do with that? Get me the hell out of here!

If you answered number 1, then standard MAME is for you. Actually you don't need to know all that much about the command line to get standard MAME up and running, but it's a lot easier if you have a rudimentary knowledge.

If you answered number 2, then MAMEUI is for you. It runs MAME through a graphical interface, and is a bit more noob friendly.

Which ever route you go, you'll want to grab the most recent version of MAME/MAMEUI (currently 0.147).

So great you've got the emulator. Congratulations! Now you need to make sure your ROMs match your version of MAME. For that little adventure you're going to need some ROM management software. I'd recommend starting out with ROM Center, although you may eventually find yourself giving ClrMamePro a try. There's plenty of information out there about how to audit your ROMs using these programs.

Here's a good one to get you started with ROM Center.

So your first step will be to get everything set up and working outside of GameEx first. Then you'll want to work through the Setup Wizard to get everything setup in GameEx.

We're skipping ahead a bit, but answering your last question; in order to update your MAME game list in GameEx you'll want to select MAME from the main menu, navigate to the bottom of the MAME category list, and select Update List from that screen.

Good luck lionheart, and let us know how you're getting along with all of this!

Hi lionheart,

Congratulations on picking a great frontend! I may have answered several of these questions in your other post right over here. If you're still having some trouble, please feel free to start a new thread and I'm sure we can get you going on the right track. Typically we try to keep GameEx release threads free from emulation questions and problem reports (mainly so your questions and problem reports get the full attention they deserve). Don't worry, we'll let you off the hook this time cowboy! :D

And once again, welcome to the forums!

Just in case anyone asks why the apparent duplicate questions and responses, I split and merged the posts above into one topic as they were regarding the same question posted in two unrelated threads.
