[RESOLVED] Question regarding upgrading from 32bit to 64bit

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi All,

Long time no see.

So, I have setup about 50+ emulators in game ex on a 32 bit instalation of windows 7 pro. The thing is when I purchased the windows licence it came with a 64 bit installation disk and I have been contemplating using it as I also run new PC games (Guild wars 2, Gears of war, Crysis etc).

My question is how easy will it be to convert my settings etc to a new instalation not just from a game ex point of view but also taking into consideration the 3rd party tools, see below

xpadder

batch files

Autohotkey

Deamon tools lite

gameex

joy2key (not so important)

cmd syntax (the command line options in mame for example)

Any feedback/tips will be great.

Thanks

As smd111 noted, should not be an issue for any of the apps you listed as any of them that are 32-bit will run fine in Win 7 x64. Some may actually have 64-bit versions that will leverage the 64-bit OS which should net you, in some cases, a noticeable performance increase. Command line options, batch files, all remain the same.

Thanks, the most important thing for me was the batch files as I worked TIRELESSLY to get my various complex batch files working.

Bah, I think I will do the upgrade, I just know I will have an issue somewhere.

While I am on topic, would the best way to re-install game ex onto the same machine be to copy the gameex.ini file and overwrite it in the new installation? (the paths to ROMS etc will not change).

Let me know.

Thanks

I would definitely recommend backing up your gameex.ini file. You may also want to backup your data directory as well (saves of your favorites are in your data.mdb file).

I've done this successfully and didn't have too many problems. Just a few minor tweaks needed on some emulators that I decided to go 64-bit (i.e. command-lines, paths, etc.). But depending on your current paths and batch files, it's hard to tell how much work would be involved without knowing the details of them. I say go for it! I'm happy I did!

Okkk,

So I upgraded my PC and installed windows 64 bit. I made a fresh install of Game EX but copied over the entire GAMEEX/DATA folder as well as the Game EXex.ini from my old installation (which was working correctly)

Game ex crashes as there seems to be an issue with mame see logs below

So yeah stuck at the first hurdle lol.

I ran mame outside gameex and it worked so I think it may be related to the command line options.

Thanks in advance

Damn pretty obvious huh? lol

Thanks for showing me what I was too blind to see.

With my old version of mame I edited the exe to include highscores and direct input. Will I need to do this again with the 64 bit version? (If so can you point me to the tutorial on how to do this again as I did it years ago and have since lost the links)

Also in regards to the controls I setup within MAME can I copy over files from the 32 bit version to this or will I need to configure it again?

Thanks again for your help

I personally don't use that version (my cab is a 32-bit OS), but you might find some success here.

Otherwise I'm sure one of the fine folks about the forums will be able to point you in the right direction. :)

Anytime massop. :D

You can copy your controls over as well as you .ini files from the 32-bit to 54-bit version. The main changes are in the executable to leverage the 64-bit OS and all else is about the same. After compiling, I usually copy the new mameui.,exe into the mame folder and that is about it.

O.k, I compiled a mame 64 bit with direct input & hi scores which works outside Game EX but now I get the same error when launching game ex

First - did you confirm all is running with mameui64 outside of GameEx and configure the paths within the new compiled version? I notice you have it in a different path than your mame32 version, so wonder if there may be some issues with regards to the file paths needed to run properly inside and outside of GameEx.

Posted

I promise it runs outside game ex.

I dont have the mameui64.exe but I have mame64.exe and when I run that (after configuring a mame.ini for rom paths etc) I am able to play games no issue.

The reason I point to another mame folder for gameex is to get the artwork and other bits that I dont have in this new instalation. Also this error is exactly the same as when I used mame(32 bit) before which was working before I upgraded to 64bit windows.

I notice a lot has changed in gameex since version 11.x could it be a setting I have missed somewhere in gameex?

Thanks

This is a codec issue I bet. Did you use the 64-bit Shark007 codec pack when you updated?

It's a GDI error so I bet you have a startup video?

Posted

Thanks Adultery your on to something.

I just changed the theme to a basic one and it loaded. Thing is I installed the 64 bit shark codec and I still got the error. I am trying to use the dark champion theme I made and there are no videos in it but something in the theme gameex does not like.

Do you have any other ideas? I will tinker some more on this

*Edit*

I loaded the theme from within game ex and the theme and mame work perfect???? weird.

I have another issue though cosmetic.

The main menu in the theme has changed from scrolling up/down to left/right with huge icons.

Any idea what happened there?

** Another Edit **

Found the "change view" button.

On with thye other emus now :)

Posted

Did you install both Shark007 codec packs? With 64-bit Windows, both are required and the install order is important - 32-bit codec pack first, then 64-bit. You may need to uninstall and the order, again, is important - 64-bit first followed by 32-bit. You will probably need to restart before reinstalling them. Also, a fresh log file will be needed to continue to investigate.

Posted

Ah I installed the shark codecs the wrong way. I will start that bit again but as it stands game ex is working due to that theme change I did.

Not sure why I had the error but its working now. I will let you know if I get any more issues configuring the other emus.

Thanks

Also you might wanna check and make sure you have all your Microsoft System Updates. If you started from scratch, you're gonna need stuff like Windows Updates, .NET, Java, Direct X, etc. I forgot to do that when I upgraded to x64 and GameEx wouldn't work right for me. After running through there and getting all the updates, and updated Video/Audio drivers, things started working like it should. Just a suggestion, you might have already done it though.

Thanks for the input guys.

I have yet another issue now. I have noticed that emulators that have roms in .7z format are no longer selectable in game ex, All I can do is view the games in a list but the option to select/play them is greyed out.

Now I know you used to be able to enable 7z support this via the old setup wizard but I cant find this setting in the new one (see attached)

I am a registered user by the way so its not to do with that.

Thanks

Have you tried using the Search feature in the Setup Wizard? I find it handy for locating most of the items my old brain cannot remember the location.

EDIT: Just checked and it is under the Advanced Emulator Configuration for Zip/7Zip/Good Merge Support. Has to be enabled for each emulator.

Thanks again guys it worked a charm.

I have found another issue again lol.

whenever I launch any emulator I have xpadder load with a set config along side, the setup is like this

Also launch

D:\Games\ultils\xpadder\xpadder.bat

xpadder.bat

@echo off

cd /D D:\games\ultils\xpadder\
start "" xpadder.exe "xbox360 P1" "xbox360 P2" /M

@echo on

Everything above this line works fine.

The issue I have is Launch After

Launch After

tskill xpadder

This is not killing xpadder when I exit the emu. I have opened command and typed this in when xpadder is running (also works with tskill.exe xpadder) and it kills xpadder. Game ex is running the command, see runitbat below

runitgame.bat

chcp 65001
D:
CD "D:\Games\emulated\Atari 7800"

ProSystem.exe -Fullscreen 1 -MenuEnabled 0 "C:\Users\Ultima\AppData\Local\Temp\Unzipped7-Zip\Double Dragon (1989) (Activision) (PAL).a78"
tskill xpadder

Again I will be greatful of your infinite wisdom :)

Try changing the Launch After command line from

tskill xpadder

to

taskkill xpadder.exe

Let us know if that remedies the issue.

EDIT: If that does not work, you may need to use the following command line with switches:

taskkill /im xpadder.exe /f
