[ATTN: TOM] Steam Integration (late to the party)

So just going around updating the PC, I see Game EX now has auto-download on art and Steam. That's all really great!

I've been trying to get Steam working on end with no luck.

When I type in my username and password in the setup config. Nothing happens inside of GameEX.

I double checked my username and password with the steam client, so at least on that end it's ok.

One thing I did notice:

When I type in my password in setup. If I exit setup and then go back into setup (before going into GameEX) my (hidden)password length is what it should be.

BUT if I type my password into setup then exit and go into GameEX, then back into setup, my Steam (hidden)password is twice as long.

Just thought I'd see if anyone had an idea.

Great update, otherwise speaking.

Hi, need to see the log to have a better idea of whats going on. The username and password is not actually required for GameEx to use Steam. Its optional and Steam should be automatically detected. GameEx encrypts the password so its normal for it to be a different length.

The path "d:\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\mass effect" is totally incorrect (double \ ) which makes the path invalid. Have not seen that occur before.

I keep my Steam games on my external(D:) drive, I wonder if that's causing the issue. I don't know why it has double \.

Might well be the case. I know that the media is saved to whatever drive GameEx is installed. I wonder if it is expecting Steam games to be on the same drive as the app.

I get that in my log too.

I'm guessing that the the double slash means that it's outputting an escape character to the log (i.e. the first '\' is an escape character for the second '\'). Just a guess.

@naborneo: You've mentioned that the Steam functionality is not working, but not the nature of the error. Is it that the Steam Games section doesn't appear under Emulated Games? Does the Steam Games section appear, but there aren't any games in the list? Are there games in the list, but they don't launch?

I have not seen a Steam menu show up in GameEx.

Good point, Orlin. This is one of the reasons why I will request the gameex.ini file submission along with the log.txt file. The log file can tell us a lot, but often there is another clue or two in the gameex.ini that the log.txt file cannot often provide.

@naborneo - let us know if you are using custom menus. If so, you will need to add a Steam item in your menu and select for the correct item type to associate with the item.

I am using custom menus, so that is probably the issue. one of the themes I created.

All you will need to do is add it via the custom menu app to test this. You can add a new background to your theme for Steam after the fact.

I am going to raise this to Tom's attention as I have noticed in quite a few logs where there is a "path invalid error" followed by these paths with \\ throughout which I do not think is correct.

Odd. Any way to have GameEx suppress the error output in the log file for just the Steam piece or will that break others?

So the no show, was defiantly because of the custom menus.

Only a few banners show up, (No Portal 2 banner, ect..)

I actually didn't try to see if a game would play, not sure why, but I'll try when I get home this-evening.

It might still be trying to download in the background. I get a banner and video for portal 2. It should keep trying to download again when you startup GameEx. Unless maybe you have some older specific version of Portal 2.

Same for me. Just give some time to GameEx to download them in the background and you'll have everything sorted out.
