Im currently working on a full set of icons for GameEx, the attached image is a brief look at what they will look like, please keep in mind I am still on a learning curve with GIMP.

I just need to do a final Glass layer on top of the icon to make it look like the logo is trapped between two layers. The reason why my Icons are styled like this because of the way my new theme looks.

Thanks, To be fair though im still confused as to how im supposed to add the final layer to the icon, I wish it was as simple as dropping a transparent glass effect layer on top of the image but i dont think it is, maybe im wrong but ive been through all filters etc.. on GIMP and cant seem to find anything yet.

Well if its anything like Photoshop, yeah you just add a layer. Or you mean you can't find the filter? You could probably use a satin effect and tweak it to look like glass. ;)

I just knocked this up using some layers from another project I was working on. You are welcome to use the .xcf file for your project.

just did a quick google search for "glass effect in gimp" and came across InstaGlass

Hey,

Yeah I came across that webpage with instaglass 1,2 and 3, when I saw them I thought yay this is what im looking for, I experimented with them in GIMP and they looked ok but when I loaded my theme and tested an icon they didn't look right

Draco I was not condoning piracy, I was just giving my account. Adobe had publicly gone out and said (I'm paraphrasing) that they will not go after individual pirates. As long as the product is not being used for commercial usage. They don't condone it, and are not going to make it easy, but they know my story happens thousands of times over. I can't buy photoshop when I'm 13, so I find other means of obtaining it. Then when I have a career/job and "hey, I need a photo editing program, well I know photoshop like the back of my hand." now I own the master suite for myself and we have 15 seats of Adobe Master Suite on a renewing contract..

That warning was uncalled for, I never said to go pirate, where to pirate, you should pirate. I think where allowed to talk openly about "ourselves" here… I'd hope, if not, it's not worth sticking around.

No worries man,

This is a place of business though, so we have to be really careful what we say. Really careful. Imagine if a McDonalds talked openly bout stealing ketchup packets from Wendy's. It's unethical but not illegal (since ketchup packets are free anyways), but they probably wouldn't speak openly about it if they did it. Ya know?

It's not a dig on you personally, just the way it is 'round here. And we have to be extra careful since we're already working a slippery slope (emulation). ;)

Don't get your shorts in a bunch. LOL!

Well they are in a bunch, but that's cause i just finished running in this hella-hot city weather haha....

I'm just very big on censorship, especally on the internet. It's one thing to say "this is how you steal 'A'" to having a conversation about morality. Up until a year ago I owned maybe 30% of the software on my computer. But when I started getting freelance worked, I would instuct the client that they would have to purchase said software before I would release the final product. Now I have a career and can honestly say 100% of my software on my computers are paided and legal, including GameEX, I can now afford to support developers small and large from literally the techniques I learned when I couldn't support them.

I will end this here though, since I pushed this thread way off course...

@naborneo - I respect you as a forum member and your contributions to our community. I respect your intent and clearly understand what you were attempting to say, however, as a former mod and now an admin of the forum, I have to enforce the rules. I don't particularly care for censorship, however, if if means protecting the integrity of this forum and keeping it "off the radar" from those that look for any opportunity to go after a site that supports the emulation community, then I will do so.

Rule 5 of the forum rules states "Do not talk or post links about illegal software or using software illegally. This includes commercial applications when used illegaly (cracks, warez etc), and free software when used illegaly including illegal MAME builds."

That being said, it is out of the respect that I have for you and your contributions that I gave a verbal warning, as opposed to deleting the message in its entirety and issuing a ban of any duration. There are other sites and their respective admins that are not so kind and will do so without so much as a concern about you.

Lol!

Well if you wanted a place to FTP your logos and themes so they're centralized (or make a web page for your projects) I'm glad to host it for you. :)

I will gladly go ahead with posting them via a webpage, Do you want me to complete the icon set first?

Posted

Its up to you. :)

I'll set you up when I get home from work. You know how to use FTP I presume?

FileZilla is an excellent FTP client. I like how your icons are turning out. Keep up the good work!
