I have two ways that GameEx has started crashing (both started after the last update).

The first is kinda random when it happens. It happens after the loading screen, before the startup screen.

The second one happens everytime I exit one of my fan games (not any emulators).

Here are the logs.

Edit: The crashes seem to be related to my custom theme. But I'm not sure why, my theme doesn't seem to be overly complicated.

If you think it may be related to your theme, you may want to zip it and provide a link to it so we can test it. Just from looking at the errors, pretty much the same in both logs. Have you tried just loading the default-default theme to see if the errors occur to be sure?

Your startup error is blaming Direct X. Make sure your card is updated and your DX is up to date.

For sure the other is theme related. Your DX error may be a problem there too though. Too many things to guess. Can we see your theme.ini for starters?

I have tried one of the other default themes and the errors did not occur.

I'll try updating directx.

EDIT: I did update DirectX. The second problem still happens with my theme. Not sure about the first problem, since it hasn't happened to me yet after the update.

Here is the Theme folder.

Based on the theme error it does not look like a GameEx issue but rather a theme one. Jusrt a thought but it could be a corrupt file or disk rather than something to do with the update.

PS: The directx help message is new with this release. Its just help text its nothing specific to this issue.

I dont think ALL of my fan games are corrupt. As this happens every time I close the games.

Also my startup crashes keep happening too. These do only happen with my theme, and I really don't know what is causing it to happen and its becomming a bit frustrating. It also happens occasionally when I exit MAME games. It seems to be random (except for my fan games). Is there no way to save my theme?

I am not sure right now. The theme error is an issue with the emulator background. Are you using specific emulator backgrounds?

PS: I meant the theme may be corrupt or some images within it.

Well, if these are background image related, I do have custom start screen and emulator bgs. Furthermore, I used the theme editor to change the hue of those 2 bgs and the menu files.

To reinstall 12.57, I just run the setup.exe file you provided and let it overwrite the files it needs to? And don't let GameEx update?

Ok I just did that. I'm pretty sure it is not the update that caused the problem. Seems it is the theme that is corrupt somehow. What would be the cause for something like that?

Right now I'm speculating that it involves adjusting the hue though the theme editor. Mainly because that's the thing I was doing around the time these problems started to occur. It also happened to coincide with the update. I also started changing all of the icons to custom sprites. But that shouldn't be the cause. Especially after what everyone here said about the error involving the background.

So I tried changing all of the background pictures back to the non edited versions. And the problem still persists.

I will try to make a new theme, and put all of the graphics I had before and see if that causes the problem again.

I discovered the culprit!

If I click the "Custom Emulator Layouts" in the options menu of the Theme Editor. It corrupts the theme file. Even after I uncheck it, the theme is corrupted and will no longer return from fan games (non emulator programs).

Looks like I will have to rebuild my theme reguardless. I will also have to avoid checking the "Custom Emulator Layouts."

What does that function do anyways?

Its so you can have custom list and image locations for each emulator. :)

Well it certainly seems like a feature I would like to use.

So I would assume that his is a bug with the program if that feature simply corrupts themes.
