Tappedout Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Hey there everyone, I always feel so bad coming into a new community (New to me) and asking dumb questions that I am positive you have all answered before. I have searched and tried to find the answer on my own but I think some of the problem is I am not sure what the question is So I'll try to explain best I can.First thanks for making a great program, I at first thought about hyperspin but quickly found GameEX to be the direction I wanted to go when building my new mame, so great job! Second I am a little confused on the file structure of things. When I installed it, Gameex created a Folder called Emulators and another one called Roms on my C drive. Now in the setting it lists it should point to C:/emulators/mame32 but it installed it in /mame does this need to be changed or will it find it? Also it seems there are two places to put roms in the /roms/mame folder and the /emulator/mame folder. Where exactly does Gameex want me to place the roms for Mame. If someone can please explain the file structure part of GameEX and explain how it should be structured and where things go I think I will be all set Thanks again guys and please be easy on me I did try searching I swear
celly Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Hello and welcome! You can put the roms or emulators in whichever folder on whatever drive, as long as you tell GameEx where to go to look for them. If you configure MAME, for instance, you have to get MAME up and running outside of GameEx so it knows where to look for ROMS. Then, within the Setup Wizard you can assign the paths for the roms and artwork and GameEx will know exactly where to go for those items. Same applies to other emulators.Best thing to do is, set em up outside of GameEx, then configure in the Wizard the paths.
Tappedout Posted April 17, 2012 Author Posted April 17, 2012 Celly,Thank you very much for the fast reply. I'm sorry to say I am even more confused here lol. I am a total noob when it comes to this, I mean I understand the basics and I'm pretty good with computers but I am very new to mame and Gameex. Would you mind breaking down the steps for me a little more so I can follow what your talking about? Thanks a ton in advance
Tappedout Posted April 17, 2012 Author Posted April 17, 2012 Also while i am thinking about it, is there anyway to have someone send me a complete setup of gameex already configured with emulators and ready to rock? I am kind of doubting but I figured I would ask lol
Draco1962 Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 You are correct to doubt! While it would be nice, GameEx already downloads and installs (but does not configure) most of the more popular emulators for you. Of course, as Celly noted, you need to get your emulators setup and working first outside of GameEx, Once working there, you can verify your GameEx ROM and image paths match what you have setup in your emulators and go from there.
fRequEnCy Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Not as easy to be sent complete setup since no one has the same setup due to hardware, file locations. etc. It would be nice! Setup Wizard does do a good job of importing the settings needed to get started and then just needs some tweaking on your end to point to the correct paths. So it does do a lot of the work for you. Once you'll see how easy it is, you'll be come a pro in no time and won't consider yourself a noob. We have a great community to help you along the way as much as we can. Do not ever feel bad to ask as that's what we're here for. Welcome the the forums!
hansolo77 Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 (edited) Celly is right, you need to have it working outside of GameEx first. It sounds like you're completely and utterly new; you want to play games, but don't know where to start.GameEx is just a frontend program that provides an easy to use interface for SELECTING the game you want to play. It doesn't actually COME with any games. The idea of GameEx is so you don't have to use your mouse and go into the game folders and manually launch an emulator and load the rom into it to play it.. it just does it all automatically for you. The part it sounds like you're getting hung up on is where to START....The first thing you need to do, is ask yourself what you want to play. MAME is an emulator program that allows you to play classic Arcade games. If you want to play something else, like the Nintendo NES, or Sega Genesis, you need to find an emulator for those systems. Since you've mentioned MAME, I'll assume you want to get that working first. So after you decided what you want, you need to GET it. You can download MAME from lots of different places, but GameEx people only support direct official versions available here: http://mamedev.org/ You can get unofficial versions, like custom builds, but you kinda have to support it yourself since we can't really see the same program you are. The thing about MAME though, is that you download MAME the 'emulator' but thats it. The next thing you need to do is get yourself some ROMs. Since talking about locating ROMs is frowned upon (emulation talk itself is a tricky matter, nobody wants to go to jail). Don't ask, nobody will tell you where to get them, all I can say is MAMEDEV does offer links to other websites that do HOST them here: http://mamedev.org/links.htmlOnce you've got MAME installed, and your ROMS are in the ROM path (\mame\roms\) then you're good to go and try a test run. You must always work with your emulator first, get it setup the way you want. When you have the game running, press the [TAB] key on your keyboard to bring up the ingame settings dialog. You can then configure all the keys you want to use.If you've gotten this far, you're almost there! You now have MAME installed, some ROMS, and have actually been able to play a few. Way to go! Now you need to setup GameEx to work with it so you don't have to go through all the manual loading of the rom you want to play. This is where the GameEx community shines in it's helpfullness. There are lots of settings, but they're all pretty straight forward. You basically are telling GameEx all the paths to the locations it's looking for. For MAME, that would be the 'install path' for MAME (Like C:\Mame) then they want the command line to LAUNCH MAME (ie; mame.exe) then they want to know where your ROMS are (ie; C:\Mame\Roms). That's the basics, and all you really need. The extra stuff you can add later, like screenshots, cabinet artwork, movies, etc. Just get to the point where GameEx can launch the ROM you want, and go from there. So it's really not 'that' hard. It just seems like a lot at first. The thing to remember is GameEx doesn't come with anything other than the interface. You must supply all the other stuff like the emulator and the roms. Get them to work well outside of GameEx first, then worry about setting them up inside GameEx.Hope this help you out, and welcome to the forums! Edited April 18, 2012 by fRequEnCy Be careful with wording. How to obtain roms is frowned upon as well. Verbal warning. Thank you!
Tappedout Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 Hansolo, Thank you sooo much for the help that clears a lot up for me! I sent you a PM with a few other questions if you get a chance! Thanks again everyone and I am VERY much looking to be a part of this community!
fRequEnCy Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 I would say how to obtain roms are against the rules as well. I will talk to the other mods/admins to see how to handle this.
celly Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 This community is kick @ss and everyone here helps out to the fullest extent that they possibly can. This is why I choose, and stay GameEx.
Tappedout Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 I would say how to obtain roms are against the rules as well. I will talk to the other mods/admins to see how to handle this. Its fine I already knew that I mean a simple google search give you all the answers anyone needs to do their own research. I was mostly confused on the set up of Gameex. I don't want to get anyone in trouble Stand down soldier lol Don't shoot him as he was only trying to help a new member of the community and as I said, finding out about roms was not hard to do, google knows all

Still against rules regardless.
Tappedout Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 understood fRequEnCy, Feel free to remove anything that's not allowed from his post as I know he was only trying to help however I didn't need that info he gave me anyway. So it won't hurt my feelings if you just gently edit his post to make it fall under the guidelines
Adultery Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 /off topic: love the dog man! I got a best friend named Champ who happens to be a german shepherd. Great dogs! Welcome to the forums!
Tappedout Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 Hey Adultery,Thanks man, yes they are great dogs in deed, I have two of them Mother and Daughter. In the picture above I had shattered my elbow and she knew I was hurt and she would not leave my side, and she always put her head on my bad arm as if wishing it would heal! They are the best dogs I have ever seen, smart, loyal, and just plain awesome! Thanks for the welcome, I'm happy to be here!
Tappedout Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 I know I am new here but from a new members stand point, even though GameEX tried to do a fantastic job of easy set up I think the fact that it created the folders for me was where a lot of the confusion was at. I am not dumb when it comes to computers or where to find thing, I was just really confused by the file structure. But thanks to Hansolo, all that is cleared up now and I can now figure out the button configs (A mess in its own mind) lol.I am really sorry if I started anything here but its good to see so many people active and caring for a community! Thank you all!
