Files in this directory are MP3s

When i click on the Game Music option for a game when i'm in Gameex, It just crash and retrun to the desktop

What i'm doing wrong.?

Is there a special file format to put in the "Game Music" directory like .wav or anything else??,

Thanks

You might need to provide us with a copy of your GameEx.ini and log.txt (post crash) files.

i have see that you have two entries for ambiencemusic in the ini..

AmbienceFile=L:\-DATA-\-MP3-\4 Non Blondes\4 Non Blondes - What's Up.mp3

AmbianceFile=C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\arcade.mp3

Good catch, Flocke!

@Rochabian - can you please manually edit your gameex.ini file and delete the line reading AmbienceFile=L:\-DATA-\-MP3-\4 Non Blondes\4 Non Blondes - What's Up.mp3 , save the file and restart GameEx and let us know the results?

@ Flocke & Draco: guys, please check your GameEx.ini too... I guess you have the same entry! And I guess you have two entries too! In fact, that line is added by GameEx itself, and it's re-added at every update... A leftover from Tom's installation, I think. This is one of the few redundant entries I spoke about, some time ago... Never had a problem with that entry, though. It seems GameEx simply skips that line.

@Rochabian: However, please do as suggested... although probably your problem is elsewhere. You don't have issues with the ambiance file, right? Which file extesion do have your music files?

You may wish to go into your gameex\data path and delete all files with cache in the filename and extension.

Posted

@AlphUmi : You're right, no problem with ambiance at all, and i'm able to play mp3 files in the jukebox and files in the "game music" folder are mp3 too

@Draco1962 : Deleted all files with cache in their names (dbcache files etc), but the problem is still here. I've deleted the line of the ambience file in the ini too with same result

Are you using this feature? Does it works for you?

Thanks

Dude! Wish I would have chimed in sooner!

Its a bug I forgot all about. I spent a week ripping, remixing, and remastering game music for this feature. It worked for a while... At first the crashes were random, and then got more and more. It took me a bit but I figured out it was emulator music that plays from a folder when that emulator is selected. I stopped using emu music and the problem went away with it, forgot all about it.

It's certainly a bug and it's specific to emulator music. It goes back at least since last year.

Sorry it took me so long but it would be balls out if this big was fixed especially since its an app crash so the log won't catch it.

You may be able to get more specific crash info from Windows Error Reporting. Could you please post your crash log from there?

Well well,

Glad to see that the problem is known.

I've got some info from Windows when it crash.

It says : Gameex.exe crash with module ntdll.dll

Hmm...

I wonder if ntdll.DLL is involved in the passing of the music file to whatever method Tom uses to play said music file?

The other thing I was thinking is I moved to W7 since this started happening, so it could also be related to XP.

Tom will have to look into this.

Posted

What I suggest at this point is to set up "music folders" for other emulators than Amiga .... and see if it works. I'm running GameEx on a WinXP SP3 old machine, and never had a problem with mp3 files....

Don't trust widows debug window... ntdll is too generic, it doesn't involve specific driver issue. Please provide us your system specifications...

Posted

The problem isn't mp3s though because my jukebox still played them fine. My ambiance file still worked fine.

It is specifically related to the emulator music in advanced emu configuration. :)

Posted

As Adultery said, it's not mp3 related because i can play mp3 in jukebox without problem

I've set up music folder for others emulators too with the same result

For me, it's related to programming, as the feature seems to works for no one.

It's like if Gameex doesn't know how to handle the file that we tell him to play (how to play this file)

I wish Tom will have a look at this

Posted

I may be able to issue a quick and dirty workaround if you're interested in the form of a plugin... Although it's not the ideal solution I could easily make something that plays music from a certain folder that only plays when that emulator is selected. Honestly I'd like to see what Tom thinks first, because going around one of his features isnt something I would feel comfortable doing without his blessing. ;)

Posted

Thanks for your proposition Adultery, but in fact, it's not a "vital" feature for me, so i don't want to take your time with this.

It's like viewing game manuals or game boxes, i use it time to time, but i prefer playing games, and for this, gameex do his job.

If it works, then i will use this feature, as Emumovies have game musics and i will be able to use them.

If it doesn't work now, i'll disable this feature.

It's more about error reporting than a really need

I just hope Tom can fix this problem in a future release

Thanks again for your approach

I just tested with SNES music on several machines but can find no crash or issue here. Is it an issue with the sekections music when browsing the emu or with game specific music for the emu?

Posted

When I pull up the emulator page, I have a folder full of music I designed specifically for that emulator. For example...

I took some SNES music rips from Super Mario World and Super Mario RPG, remixed and rearranged them and put them in a folder: Emu Music > SNES.

Every time I select SNES, it plays music from this specific folder (game music is a different thing) while I browse that list. Here's where it gets wonky though...

It doesn't crash on the same song, or every time I select SNES even. Completely random. It's a hard crash so no log file. I tried subbing in and out custom menus to test and that didn't make a difference at all. I tried other mp3s (even though I use a straight 192 kbps encode for all my own mp3s and they play fine in the jukebox). It started out as once in a while. After a while it got more and more frequent until it was just better to stop using the mp3s n the emu music section altogether.

If I had to pinpoint when it started (or when I figured out why it was happening) was either right before or right after the big move to DX (maybe you made some changes to GameEx's audio rendering at that time as well?). I mean it may have been crashing on occasion before that and just got progressively worse after, so I wouldn't have noticed it as much before. I know the time frame because I rebuilt my rig's internals and hoped it would go away but it didn't. I probably would have shrugged it off if I hadn't taken the time to remix the music by hand myself. :)

I'll see if I an find my initial bug report.

EDIT: Here it is, from 9/10/11 (GameEx 12.05 it really got crazy!) http://tinyurl.com/7w8ylu7

I hope that helps!

My visualizer has no problems.

I'm headed downstairs to try this now.

.:EDIT:. That worked for me! Thanks Tom!

Vizualiser has no problem too

With your files replacement, it's the same as before for me :(

I think i will call "THE EXORCIST" :). Does anyone have his phone number ?

Just an update to say that with latest versions of Gameex the problem has disapearred.

Game Music works great now.

I've seen that when you choose game music file, it starts up directly with the visualization

Can you do the same things with radios, Tom ? Or an option to able this

Thanks
