First off thanks for any help you can provide. I have read and read and still can't seem to figure this out. I had gameex showing the mame roms but they did not play. I thought it was because i downloaded the wrong mame emulator. I now have mameui32 downloaded with a few roms. When I try to lauch a game from mameui32 i just get a box at the bottom of screen but it can't load. Is the problem with the roms? This is my first time with emulators and roms but I think I have a basic understanding. And now when I launch gameex I cant even read the emulators. Its like it doesnt completely load. Thanks again for any help

Hello and welcome!

First of all, we need your configuration and your log files to troubleshoot this problem closer. Your issue is too vague for now. Please read http://www.gameex.in...o-ask-for-help/ and post the relevant files here so we can have a closer sight of what is happening.

This will be a starting point, but a necessary one.

Regards,

Alpha

So explain to me exactly what's happening here (in addition to adding the files that Alpha asked you to post). You launch a game, the game doesn't load but the GameEx info box pops up? Or does it fall back to your gamelist?

hope that is the right file you are looking for. after more trial and error, I have gameex setup and I can see the roms I have under mame emulator. when i select a game and then hit play game after 3 or 4 sec it comes back to the game menu. i have never used these roms so i'm not sure they are good. but more likely i'm setting something up wrong. i'm not going to mess with it anymore until i get some feedback. one thing i'm noticing is every other time i load gameex is doens't fully load. thanks again for the help

You said you have MAMEUI32, but it seems you actually have MAME. I would check for version conflict. Which version of MAME GameEx downloaded for you? (hover your mause over the main MAME executable and read the version). Which romset version do you have?

Since it's difficult to find older version of MAMEUI, unless you have the latest 144 romset, I think it's better for you to manually download the MAME version that match with your romset and re-set paths and everything MAME-related in Setup Wizard.

http://mamedev.org/

Update your game list in GameEx.

Don't try to launch MAME directly, it is a command line application and doesn't have a GUI interface. Use GameEx to launch your games istead, and let us know what happens.

yes i started with mameui32 but that didn't work so i tried mame via gameex. mame file version 0.141 downloaded by gameex. i only have a few roms so if i lost them it would be a huge deal. how to i match up roms with the right version of mame. should i download mame from mamedev and delete the folder from gameex. does it matter if i download the source file or binary file. thanks for being patient with me and for the help

This will require that you delve into the wonderful world of ROM auditing tools. I feel that ROM auditing is one of the most important aspects of this hobby, and one of the key components that separate those that dabble in emulation from those that seriously address emulation as a hobby. There are typically two schools of thought regarding ROM auditing tools: those that favor ROM Center and those that favor clrmamepro. Clrmamepro has been around for a bit longer, and seems to have a somewhat steep learning curve. ROM Center seems to be a bit more intuitive, but my experience with it is fairly limited. Both programs are excellent at what they do.

The following forum post contains links to some good clrmamepro tutorials:

http://www.dadsfme.c...hp?topic=2616.0

In order to understand what clrmamepro is doing it would probably be best to work through those tutorials in order, but you’ll want to pay especially close attention to the last two tutorials in the series as they relate specifically to MAME.

I’ve only dabbled with ROM Center so don’t really have good ROM Center tutorial suggestions. They’re certainly out there if you care to look though.

should i download mame from mamedev and delete the folder from gameex.

Technically it shouldn’t matter. A lot of users would advise that you simply grab the most recent stable release (currently 0.144). More advanced users would advise that you take a look at the change logs to determine if the version of MAME you’re using supports the games you want to play. Notably 0.144 lost the ability to play a lot of the great Cave shmups (at least it’s still this way as far as I know – it’s certainly the reason I’m still on 0.143 ;) )

does it matter if i download the source file or binary file

Yes, it matters rather a lot. In your case I’d recommend simply downloading the binary file. Essentially this boils down to the following distinction: The binary contains an executable which will run on your computer. The source contains the source code for the project. Once you’ve been around a while you might decide that you’d like to compile your own version of MAME in order to enable custom features in the program (high score support, no nag screens, etc.). At that point you’ll want to grab the source code which can henceforth be compiled into an executable. Further discussion of compiling is outside the scope of your initial question, unless you want to go there. I’d recommend getting a handle on MAME and ROM auditing before you jump into compiling.

If you wouldn't mind posting the contents of your gamee.ini file. You will find it under \gameex\config . You can zip the file and attach it to your response. Thanks!

Just from reviewing the log file, I would suggest going through the MAME section of the Setup Wizard and setting the paths for the items showing missing in the log file. You will need to make sure that you have setup the paths in MAME first so that both MAME and GameEx are looking for the same files in the same locations.

Looks like you copied your log.txt file again. B)

If you haven't set up you file paths in MAME, then you have some work ahead of you. Since GameEX is a Front End, it doesn't control your emulator. It is imperative that you setup the paths for your ROMS, Snaps, etc. within each emulator you care to run through GameEx from within each emulator outside of GameEx.

Generally, you will want to setup MAME to run alone. Once you have it running and playing your ROMS via the emulator, you will then need to setup GameEx as previously noted.

Not a problem. There is a lot about this hobby so no need to apologize for not knowing. Front ends (GameEx, MaLa, HyperSpin, etc.) are kind of what you might think of as the local mall - a central gathering place of different stores (your emulators) and their products (ROMS, Images, etc.). Before you can sell widgets at the mall, you have to have a fully stocked & operational Widgets-R-Us. You are still stocking your store and configuring it to operate correctly.

Just ask lots of questions, take notes. We are here to share and help!

You should consider reading the topic "How to Ask For Help". It not only shows how to ask for help, but it contains information on debugging your setup. There is a link to "How to ask for help" in Draco's signature.

As Tempest said, you should read the post "How to ask for help". It includes complete instructions. Here's the link for your convenience:

http://www.gameex.info/forums/topic/6451-how-to-ask-for-help/page__p__47474#entry47474.

Since the forum recentrly changed, here's how to attach files: use the "More Reply Options", and you'll find it.

Zip your GameEx.ini or convert it to .txt. I'm not sure how this works now, but before the "new restyling", you weren't allowed to attach ini files.
