flashlight Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 Im pretty tech savy but new to mame/gameex. Mame works without issue but gameex seems to not want to launch for some reason. I literally just installed latest directx and ati drivers for ati 9800 pro and latest nforce drivers for an old a7n8x deluxe motherboard. 07:40:37.7 10/21/2011: Opening Configuration File07:40:37.7 10/21/2011: GameEx: Version 12.17: Starting Log07:40:37.7 10/21/2011: Operating System Platform: Win32NT07:40:37.7 10/21/2011: Operating System Name: Windows XP x6407:40:37.7 10/21/2011: Operating System Version: 5.2.379007:40:37.7 10/21/2011: Running under Remote Desktop07:40:37.7 10/21/2011: Checking for versions of .net Framework installed07:40:37.7 10/21/2011: .net Framework 1.1 Installed07:40:37.7 10/21/2011: .net Framework 2.0 Installed07:40:37.7 10/21/2011: .net Framework 3.0 Installed07:40:37.7 10/21/2011: .net Framework 3.5 Installed07:40:37.7 10/21/2011: AMD Athlon XP 2500+, 1023MB07:40:37.7 10/21/2011: 1.84Ghz07:40:37.7 10/21/2011: Running Randomize()07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Loading PlugIns07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Checking for applications to Launch On Startup07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Running Misc startup tasks07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Setting Menu types07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Getting Configuration Values07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Using Theme: Default - Default - Animated07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Checking for alternate Image Directory for Theme: Default - Default - Animated07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Using Images from theme: Default - Default\MEDIA\07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Launching HideOS.exe07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Initialising Video/MNG DLL's07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: GameEx will check for media insertion (may affect performance)07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Hiding Taskbar07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Is Media Center running?07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Checking/Creating LCD Registry values07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Check Media Center Exit/Start Mode07:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Media Center Mode 207:40:37.8 10/21/2011: Video previews on. nizzoatlarge Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 Not sure if this will work for you, but I had this error when I first started GameEx a couple months ago. Its looks like its bombing on the Direct3d portion of directx. Could be a video card driver problem. The way I had to get it working was to change my video card drivers to an older driver (i use an nvidia 8800 gts with driver 204.65 and not the newest driver of 275 something.)Im not sure if this is the problem or not for you, but I couldnt use drivers that WERE NOT WHQL certified, kept crashing every time I used NON WHQL CERTIFIED drivers...... thats why I had to drop down to an older driver. Just wanted to throw out what I did to fix this issue for me. Maybe Draco, Freq, or Adultery will have a more definite answer for you. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Draco1962 Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 Definitely appears to be video driver related. Make sure you have the latest for your video card. If you have the latest and still an issue, try reverting to an older driver. Would help to know what video card you are using. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
fRequEnCy Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 Maybe try setting Use 16 Bit Colour to Yes in Display Settings? If not then as mentioned this is usually due to a driver issue. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
flashlight Posted October 21, 2011 Author Share Posted October 21, 2011 As i stated in ticket i used the latest drivers for me ati 9800 pro, i will look for an older whql driver set.i tried setting the display settings to use 16 bit, just like my desktop is already set. I also tried changing "Dont set resolution" and "change resolution to the below" 800x600, still get the error saying its trying to set the resolution to 1024x76809:49:55.4 10/21/2011: Setting Resolution to 1024x768 16 bit color09:49:55.4 10/21/2011: Creating Surfaces09:49:55.5 10/21/2011: --**--09:49:55.5 10/21/2011: Error: Error in the application.09:49:55.5 10/21/2011: at Microsoft.DirectX.Direct3D.Manager.GetDeviceCaps(Int32 adapter, DeviceType deviceType)09:49:55.5 10/21/2011: at ᜎ.ᜀ(Form A_0, Int32 A_1, Int32 A_2, Boolean A_3, Boolean A_4, Boolean A_5, Boolean A_6)09:49:55.5 10/21/2011: at ᜎ..ctor(Form A_0, Int32 A_1, Int32 A_2, Boolean A_3, Boolean A_4, Boolean A_5, Boolean A_6)09:49:55.5 10/21/2011: at a.ᜀ(Boolean A_0, Boolean A_1, Boolean A_2, Boolean A_3, Int32 A_4)09:49:55.5 10/21/2011: at a.ᜁ(Boolean A_0, Boolean A_1, Boolean A_2)09:49:55.5 10/21/2011: at a.ᜀ(Boolean A_0, String A_1, Boolean A_2)**********For t/s reasons, i even tried unchecking use full screen and now get: **************09:54:00.3 10/21/2011: GameEx will try to reduce CPU usage09:54:00.3 10/21/2011: Initialising Direct3D09:54:00.4 10/21/2011: Creating Surfaces09:54:00.5 10/21/2011: --**--09:54:00.5 10/21/2011: Error: Error in the application.09:54:00.5 10/21/2011: at Microsoft.DirectX.Direct3D.Manager.GetDeviceCaps(Int32 adapter, DeviceType deviceType)09:54:00.5 10/21/2011: at ᜎ.ᜀ(Form A_0, Int32 A_1, Int32 A_2, Boolean A_3, Boolean A_4, Boolean A_5, Boolean A_6)09:54:00.5 10/21/2011: at ᜎ..ctor(Form A_0, Int32 A_1, Int32 A_2, Boolean A_3, Boolean A_4, Boolean A_5, Boolean A_6)09:54:00.5 10/21/2011: at a.ᜀ(Boolean A_0, Boolean A_1, Boolean A_2, Boolean A_3, Int32 A_4)09:54:00.5 10/21/2011: at a.ᜁ(Boolean A_0, Boolean A_1, Boolean A_2)09:54:00.5 10/21/2011: at a.ᜀ(Boolean A_0, String A_1, Boolean A_2)09:54:00.5 10/21/2011: at a..ctor() Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
nizzoatlarge Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 The site I used to get my video card drivers is http://www.guru3d.com/Click on downloads and then the ATI Catalyst for your operating system. Their descriptions tell you right away if they WHQL certified.EDIT: What version of DirectX are you using? have your tried running the DXDIAG from RUN in windows START menu. This will tell you what version your running, check WHQL certification and you will be able to run tests fro DirectDraw and Direct3d Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
flashlight Posted October 21, 2011 Author Share Posted October 21, 2011 I can tell by device manager properties driver tab, my driver is not digitally signed however the whql drivers downloaded from guru3d for xp are not being accepted as a valid driver for windows home server 2003. Any idea where i can find whql drivers for 9800 pro for whs ? I tried xp 64 bit version even though im not using that and gameex says i am, and those wouldnt even install. nizzoatlarge Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 You are using windows home server 2003?? no none of guru3ds drivers will work for you. I was looking at the log and it said win xp 64 bit. The only place I know of to get WHS 2003 drivers is on the manufacture of the video card website, and even then you will be lucky to even find them. drivers for WHS are hard to find period. Now the next question should be for Tom or a programmer. Is GameEx compatible with Windows Home Server? In my honest IT opinion, drop server and go with xp home or professional. better yet go for win 7. I running win 7 professional 32 bit and it works like a charm. flashlight Posted October 21, 2011 Author Share Posted October 21, 2011 I couldnt find any legacy whql at the amd site. Usually xp drivers work, in fact the drivers i use were 2/24/2010http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Legacy/Pages/radeonaiw_xp.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.13〈=Englishthough they arent digitally signed. For some reason none of the ones at guru3d for xp/32 bit are being accepted whether installed via exe, or even manually installing the driver in device manager from the c:\ati folder for 3 different whql certified driver sets i got from guru3d. Adultery Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 It says Direct3D Not Available in your dxdiag. GameEx uses Direct3D for its rendering. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
nizzoatlarge Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 ------------DxDiag Notes------------DirectX Files Tab: No problems found.Display Tab 1: No problems found. Direct3D functionality not available. You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer.Sound Tab 1: No problems found.Music Tab: No DirectMusic ports were found.Input Tab: No problems found.Network Tab: No problems found.Yep....driver issue. Even though the driver works and is accepted, DirectX isnt seeing it. trying re-intsalling Directx 9c again or maybe even getting 10, that might fix the issue. Try that before you go looking for another driver for the video card.EDIT: Its a driver issue. your computer is using the "generic driver" from windows. You dont have to re-install DirectX, thats not the problem. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
flashlight Posted October 21, 2011 Author Share Posted October 21, 2011 I could be really stupid and we will find out in an hour. I installed and remotely ran GameEx from work just as a test and i noticed in the log file:13:29:33.3 10/21/2011: Opening Configuration File13:29:33.3 10/21/2011: GameEx Lite: Version 12.17: Starting Log13:29:33.3 10/21/2011: Operating System Platform: Win32NT13:29:33.3 10/21/2011: Operating System Name: Windows XP x6413:29:33.3 10/21/2011: Operating System Version: 5.2.379013:29:33.3 10/21/2011: Running under Remote DesktopI think while remote desktop is running, direct3d is disabled. nizzoatlarge Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 I run MSTSC all day at work, and your right direct3d is disabled to save on bandwidth. I didnt even notice that at all, at least not till you pointed it out. DAMN....Now I feel like an idiot, since I didnt catch it in the log. Draco1962 Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 To be honest, GameEx is not designed to run on Windows Home Server 2003 (which is further removed from XP than Server 2003 is). If this is what you are runnijng, I think we might need to stop right here until you have a dedicated Windows OS to knock about. I know there may be some temptation to be able to run your games and emus from every room, but this just isn't going to work if that is the case. Adultery Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 That's definitely the issue. You'll have to address that first. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Adultery Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 Upgrading the os is not an option? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Draco1962 Posted October 21, 2011 Share Posted October 21, 2011 Not with WHS. It is derived from Windows 2003 (which is actually XP at its core). It isn't really designed for running as a stand-alone OS. It is more file server/NAS and is designed to be headless and this is why there is no need for DirectX support. hansolo77 Posted October 22, 2011 Share Posted October 22, 2011 Offtopic;WHS is awesome if I may say so... I've had it ever since it came out. Even though I've been through a fire and lost 7 out of the 10 original drives, I never once lost any of the data because of the way it manages drive space. If you got some extra money laying around, I fully recommend getting one setup in your home. Mines a self-built box with 10 drives (6 are 1tb, 3 are 500gb, and my boot is a 250gb). Almost 8TB of storage space. And I use every bit of it for filesharing, and about 100gb for client pc backups. I have our entire music collection and digital photos on there. Plus over 100 complete TV shows, and well over 200 movies in HD. I also now have all my ROMS, Emus, and artwork extras all backed up so if my game drive ever dies again, I can easily re-copy everything over. It's a very nice setup.
