Hey guys. It's time to retire my virus scan/internet security (Avira) program for something new. Just curious what everyone is running that is less intrusive for gaming cab pc but still up to date on the latest virus stuffs.

I use Avast! for my AV on the cab. It works great and definitions are updated everyday. Never had a virus on it, ever. As a matter of fact, all our computers in the house use it and I've never had a problem with any of them. If I fix a client's computer, I recommend this to them also.

And it's free. :)

I am running Windows Security Essentials. It has caused me little to no problems with anything emulator or GameEx related. Easy to use, takes up little memory. And it is free as well. Surprisingly has received pretty good reviews being an MS product. One of the least intrusive I have used. Another good one, despite being paid is ESET NOD32.

Thanks for the suggestions. I used to run Avast on my old rig and it seemed to do alright. That Windows Security one I think came on my HP Mini, along with the hog Norton 360. I'll fire it up and check that out too. Thanks guys.

+1 for Avast. I switched a few months ago after using AVG for ages. Too many false positives caused me to switch. I still get false positives from time to time, but they're mostly from, probably dodgy looking, add-ons for Windows Media Center.

Seems like Avast will be the way I go then. I like +1's. Anyone running the full version or is everyone on the free ninty nine version?

I am running the Avast free version on my XP Mode virtual machine under Win 7 as MS Security Essentials runs only on Vista and above.

I always use the free version. The way I see it, there's a fully capable free version of nearly every piece of useful software, it's just hard to find them sometimes. :)

+1 for this recommendation. To be fully honest, I had used a 'pirated' version before the fire (i wasn't working at the time). Since I've now got a job and have been rebuilding, I actually did buy a full licensed copy. I think it's great. It's got a customizable interface, and as Adultery says..it updates every single day. I too have never had a virus with this. I also have a purchased license to Malware Bytes AntiMalware. I have both scanners set to run a quick scan every other day (Avast one day, Malware the other) and then they both do a full deep scan once a week. Plus they do their regular 'behind the scenes' scanning all the time. Been clean so far!

Rule 5. Do not talk or post links about illegal software or using software illegally. This includes commercial applications when used illegaly (cracks, warez etc), and free software when used illegaly including illegal MAME builds.

What kind of adddon's do you have/use for Media Center? I'm always looking for things to improve my experience. Right now, I just have Media Browser, MiraTV, and a weather app called Vista4Cast that actually puts a 3-day weather icon (like the new v4 themes) in the corner on my Media Center Start page. Very nice apps.

Please refrain from discussions about piracy or using copies of pirated software. All - Please feel free to contact me or any of the other mods or admins if you have any questions regarding rule 5.

I use the free version. I didn't feel the paid one was necessary.

Han, I use Media Center Master (metadata), Media Center Studio(theme/skin the UI), Radiotime (streaming radio), My Channel Logos (Channel Logos in the guide), and Remote Potato (Set recordings and stream video and music from you phone or remote computer). I've had a bunch of different add-ons, but those are the only ones I always have installed.

@Kustom Kid - Oh yea, I forgot I had used My Channel Logos too. Haven't ran it in a long time, since I got all my logo's I needed. :) I used to use Radiotime, but didn't like it too much. I also dabbled in Live365, but dislike the occasional station break. I'd like to use something that has Shoutcast, so I can listen to some of my favorite channels from there. Never heard of Remove Potato. I also use Media Center Studio (the beta I guess) to move stuff around, and made my own "My Media" bar where I have Media Browser, MiraTV, Collectorz Movie List (forgot to mention that one too!, only it's just a databasing program since I use Media Browser instead for streaming).

@Everybody Else - Slap me harder guys! I keep slipping up about my 'piracy' hijinks. I really don't do it on purpose. And I'm trying my best to catch myself. I'm not posting links or anything, I know THAT's just way way wrong. The little slips I do are just cause I'm too ignorant to notice. I felt bad about mentioning it, that's why I said I now have a fully licensed version. But anyway..water under the bridge. I've done my time. I'm over it. I'm moving on. Just wanted to apologize to the community, and thank you guys for catching me again before I really got into trouble.

No worries. Sometimes a little slap on the wrist is a good thing. We're not here to judge, but we already walk a grey area and prefer to keep as far put of danger as possible. :)

Well I used to use nothing but Symantec Endpoint but now happily use security essentials its free and seems to work well with no issues.

@celly did you say this was for a cab?. I dont put any AV in mine, but then it hardly ever goes online.

Yeah its for my cab. My house has too many other devices that go on the net, I rarely use it to go on interwebs. Just nice to have some security on it.
