[RESOLVED] Final GameBase Setup - Commodore Amiga

This really isn't as much about GameBase, as it is the emulator "WinUAE". As I recall from years ago, I created a thread documenting a step by step procedure for setting WinUAE up and having it load roms (via HK's loader) into fullscreen mode. Since I'm not using the emulator straight in now, and rather through GameBase, I'm having a helluva time remembering how I got WinUAE setup.

For starters, I have been able to successfully launch a game through GameBase into WinUAE and play it. So my problem is not with the GameBase setup. It sees my paths, and is able to launch the game. My problem is that it launches in a window. I'd like to get it to launch full screen. There in lies my problem (as it is, I seem to have had this problem with all my GameBases so far). I can configure WinUAE outside of GameBase to go into full screen while using the quickstart GUI, but it seems to lose the setting after closing down the emulator. I've tried to SAVE the settings, but that doesn't work, as the GUI doesn't auto-load the settings. SOmething else I'm having trouble with is getting the proper configuration while IN full screen; ie.. I can't get it to be in a proper resolution, centered, and in correct aspect ratio. There are various tickboxes for these, "[x] Center Horizontally, [x] Center Vertically, [x] Correct Aspect Ratio", however even when these are all checked, the fullscreen mode is a FULL screen filling my 16x9 display, with the BIOS rom image loaded off center.

So I ask the community again for some help, even though I know I'll probably figure it out on my own tomorrow. :)

1) Has anybody been able to successfully set up WinUAE to load into Full Screen on a 16x9 display, while maintaining aspect ratio?

2) How have you overcome the problem of the emulator not loading the saved configuration setting?

3) Has anybody been able to completely integrate launching a game, from GameEx, through GameBase, into full screen?

Thanks guys! ;)

EDIT: Misunderstood smartass remark removed. :)

So I spent a few hours today, trying to figure out how to make this thing work, and I just couldn't figure it out. So I did a Google (gasp!) search on the web for "winuae fullscreen" and found this link as the first suggestion: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=33928 Turns out, it wasn't that hard to get working then. For some reason, WinUAE always loads a generic default setup, no matter what you do. You can save your settings, but you have to MANUALLY load those settings each and every time you start WinUAE. Perhaps this is a new failsafe feature in my version, I dunno. So anyway, GameBase has 2 settings it uses, each for a specific type of file (regular vs. WHDLoad). All I had to do was open each setting file and configure the new settings for Full Screen, then re-save (overwriting) the file using the same name. I did this for both files. Now when GameBase is running, it automatically tells WinUAE which setting file to load, and does all the work for you (hence why we love GameBase :)). The hard part is that when you're loading and saving your settings files, it doesn't display in the dialog box that you have it open, but you do.

As for the settings themselves, this is what I had to change. If you have a 16x9 display, and want the emulator to run in FULL SCREEN, and have (as close as you can) correct aspect ratio, I chose these settings:

(All Settings under Host/Display Tab)

Screen Box: Full Screen Drop Down: Primary Display Adapter / 720x480 / 16 / Default

Screen Box: Windowed: 640x512

Centering Box: [x] Horizontal / [x] Vertical

Settings Box: Native Mode Drop Down: Fullscreen + VSync

Settings Box: RTG Mode Drop Down: Windowed

Settings Box: [x] Correct Aspect Ratio

Settings Box: [ ] Force Low Resolution

Settings Box: [ ] Filtered Low Resolution

Settings Box: Refresh Bar: Every Frame

Settings Box: FPS ADJ: 50

Line Mode Box: Double

Thats it. Make sure you make these changes to BOTH the "GameBase Amiga.uae" and "WHDLoad.uae" files in the GameBase Amiga sub folder of GameBase. Hope this helps somebody out there!

Ok, sometimes you guys are a little slow on the help, but I assume its probably because you're not using the same setup as me, thus can't troubeshoot.

OK, Han ol' buddy, ol' chum. I need to ask this and I do not mean it to come across as mean-spirited as this is not my intent. My question is, do you proof your posts prior to hitting submit so as not to say something that might just be a bit offensive to someone? You posted your dilemma last night, you respond about 18 hrs later with a solution - great! Share your findings with the forum as it is useful information to say the least.

But dangit, dude, give us a.) A chance to respond. You may be right in that we are not running the same setup or even the same emulators/systems as you, b.) To say we are slow on the help to me is a slap in the face. There is nothing in being an Elite, Moderator, or Admin that guarantees any forum member instant or 24 hour or less response. I think it's fair to say that we generally do so with a great many issues because we have a desire to help and learn ourselves. While talking of fairness, keep in mind that all of us receive no financial compensation and do not expect it as we are here for the love of the hobby and the friends made along the way.

+1 for B. Let me tell you a story...

You may or may not know I run a repair business from my house for extra cash. Everyone around here knows I take pride in my work and charge about half of what other similar shops charge around here and typically finish jobs overnight. Enough people use my services that I've been asked to appear in court twice as an expert witness. Word spreads fast enough around here that plenty of people use my services and talk highly of the work I do.

Enter Gretchen. I've been telling her for years she needs to do a backup and get a new computer (still on Windows 98 even). She doesn't. Last week her HDD finally gives up and stops spinning. I tell her she's SOL unless she pays a recovery service to get her data back after running some diagnostics. Then she calls me the next day and says her IT guy at work says the data may be able to be recovered, but she'd better get it back before someone "who's screwing around and obviously doesn't know what the hell they're doing" makes it impossible to save anything. I hope he has fun with a HDD that doesn't even spin anymore and won't be recovered with crappy software. Needless to say I won't be taking her calls anymore, and she can shove her 12+ y/o computer up her... you get the point.

What I'm saying is people work hard around here for nothing more than to help people, and the only pay we get is the occasional thanks. However, a comment like that kinda wipes out the last 20 positive comments we got.

Remember that not everyone here has time to iron out all the most obscure problems on your schedule. Thanks for telling us how you fixed it for future users, just be a little compassionate to those who do a job for free for the benefiit of others.

Woah woah woah guys! I was being a smartass! I know you guys are a big help, and it's got nothing to do with me being impatient! Sheesh, way to make a guy feel bad. :( I was just expressing my happiness in that I was able to find it first, without having to wait for somebody else to try and troubleshoot it with me.

I'll fix that post so nobody else has any  moments.

I can accept that - I can come across a little SA once in a while, but I try to watch it as there is a greater audience that we want to attract to these forums and this software. We also do not have the benefit of seeing one's devilish smirk or winking and nudging from the other side of the keyboard. Please be mindful of that going forward and the "moments" will be far and few between! ;)

I wasn't trying to make ya feel bad, just telling a story. ;)

The internet sucks sometimes because you might miss the mood it was told in. My ranting is never directed at anyone in particular, which is why I added in the good ol' /rant tag. That's just what it is. Promise. :D

Nothin' but love for the GameEx gang!

+3 shots of Jag, bartender!!
