I have just come back to GameEx (after using Meedio for some time) and although I have everything setup much like I want it I have a few general questions if anyone could help please:

1.) How do I set up my controller (gamepad) to work with GameEx?

2.) How do I set up Game Screenshot Backgrounds? and/or Game Video Backgrounds?

3.) Where do I find the Emulator Databases so I can edit/modify the Categorises for each game, etc so they appear as I want them to on the list/menu, especially using C64, etc so I can filter (on the left hand menu of the game list) for manufacturer, year, game type, etc

Thanks,

Neil

HI Neal and welcome back! You have a few questions rolled into the post so I will attempt to help as I can and others will likely chime in as well. I will likely have to answer your questions with some questions.

1.) How do I set up my controller (gamepad) to work with GameEx?

GameEx has some built-in support but a lot depends on what you are using and how you intend to use it within GameEx. What kind of gamepad are you using? Any profiler software (Xpadder, Joy-to-Key, Logitech Profiler, etc.).

2.) How do I set up Game Screenshot Backgrounds? and/or Game Video Backgrounds?

Are you using a specific theme at present? Usually, you can click "Change View" until the desired background displays from within any theme, however, you will have to have the in-game videos and/or snaps for the game(s) to do so. Do you have these already?

3.) Where do I find the Emulator Databases so I can edit/modify the Categorises for each game, etc so they appear as I want them to on the list/menu, especially using C64, etc so I can filter (on the left hand menu of the game list) for manufacturer, year, game type, etc

The Emulator Databases are located under the \gameex\data\emulators directory. You may need to change the rights to these files that you modify to read only to prevent them from being overwritten during updates (but I am not the expert on this so will defer to one of the more experienced forum members for a definitive answer.

For C64 are you using a regular emulator or accessing through Gamebase? If accessing via Gamebase, the db is housed with in it and is not accessible as far as I am aware for editing.

thanks. in reply...

1) I didn't plan on using a 3rd party util but I do have Joy-To-Key, etc if required. I assumed GameEx could be setup without the requirement for the extra util?

2) I don't believe I have an 'Change View' option - how do I add this please?

Note: My Theme is an older theme but which I resaved under the name of my arcade PC - so no updates would affect it. I have changhed everything from icon logos to background, sounds, etdc - all works well.

3) Thanks, found them just before you replied. I have copied and renamed that way updates won't affect them in any way and I have a set list of games, onesd which I remember and play only - not full lists required. :) (I have change the link to the DB in the config area for the particular emulator as well). I am even creating new ones for my PC games, etc :)

Thanks for your help, much appreciated. I have somne other questions which have come to my attention during setting it all up which I will post soon.

NEW QUESTIONS:

4.) I have some roms which are duplicate shown, then I worked out it was due to (2) Disc 2, DIsc 3 etc. How can I remove this - I assume placing *(2)*, *(3)* in the excluded files section would work?

5.) I have application linkls but how do I enable this in the config program as its faded out in my menu? (I use custom menu)

6.) Same goes for HTML Apps?

7.) I have ScummVM on my machine but does anyone have the config setup for this as I can't get it to show the games, etc It shows all files as I am searching by *.exe for the rom type in the folders/sub folders.

8.) Change View - see Q2 above :)

Thanks again. I beginning to fall in love with GameEx again, much better in version 12 :)

Here's an answer for you ScummVM located here. For some reason before, dummy files where used to launch games. The setup is a lot simpler now.

#4: Make a MAP file. The game list will be built from that instead of using your ROM filter. Not sure how you would access other discs when the time comes unless you manually rename them or edit your MAP file.

#5: there's an importable config for Windows games that uses the lnk method. I would start there unless you mean something else, in which case please elaborate.

#6: Not sure I follow you man. I think you'll need to describe what you're trying to do a little better.

#8: All you have to do is click 'Change View' in the toolbar a couple times until you get the desired result. If your theme lacks the toolbar there may be a way to set this up in the theme.ini but I don't believe I've ever seen it. In which case you'll have to enable the feature in the Theme Editor app.

Dummy files were needed before they introduced better command-line options in ScummVM which made them obsolete. Thank the SVM devs for listening and implimenting a much more friendly solution. ;)

thanks, that helped a lot.

just out of interest how do i map a .map file for my emulator/games list?

What I mean't by HTMP Applications and External Applictaions is that there are settings in the GameEx Configuration for these - and although I have enabled them I cant seem to get them to display?

Is there a setting for play8ing music from the main menu - as mine is playing some but I have not set this and can't find the setting anyway.

Also, how do I make it so all ym emulators show the INFO PAGE - I have set this to true but it automatically runs the game first?

Lastly, how do I get a nice weather display page being shown?

Thanks,

Neil

Here is what I got for you.

- The .map file can be configured through the Setup Wizard when you select a particular emulator.

- Playing music (ambient through GameEx) is also a setting in the Setup Wizard. You can point GameEx to a specific location of mp3's and GameEx will do the rest.

- As for the weather display, this too is a Setup Wizard function that will work with version 4 themes.

In addition, the weather icon is something you'll have to enable it in the theme editor and place that item in your theme, as is the same with the toolbar mentiond earlier.

If your HTML/External apps are unselectable, you have something set up wrong somewhere.

To display the info page make sure it is enabled in that emulator's settings (showInfoPage=True).
