Atari 720 ~ Xbox 360/PC controller ~ config assistance

Greetings, I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I've searched here, on the MAME forums/sites, and google-fu'ed the hell out of it... But I can't find a decent solution that isn't a hack-job.

I'm using an XBox360 for the PC controller. Obviously 720 used a rotary controller, I don't have one of those.

I've got the standard 'character spins uncontrollably' issue using my 360 controller. All I'm looking for is either a decent gamepad controller .ini example for 720 I can tweak, or a method within the GameEx tools to configure my 360 controller to allow me to emulate the rotary controller with the standard stick(s). A few pointers or at least point me in the right direction.

This is the -one- game that I really set up MAME for, it'd be nice to play it.

Thanks for any assistance.

I assume you mean 720 Degrees ? I am not sure if there is anything for the digital or analog controllers that can truly emulate the special controller for this or similar games, but I am still relatively new. I have seen that there are some that built their own special controller and have archive sites for them. I am sure if any of the other users have an idea they will chime in.

I got the same controller, but I haven't messed around with that game. I was recently trying to get driving games to respond correctly to the analog stick, but that didnt work out too well either. I need to spend some more time tweaking settings to see what works and what doesn't.

I did find some information regarding a program called GlovePie - you may need to dig further and I cannot guarantee a solution to your issue but it is possible someone has scripted this type of control issue. There may even be some solutions through xpadder but again , I am not aware of any specifics.

isnt 720 a spinner or trackball game? sad thing is some game controls just cannot be emulated using a normal controller.same thing goes for Ikari Warriors 1-3.they had a rotary joystick and its just impossible to control those games with a 360 controller or arcade stick ....sucks i know!

You could play it on on a NES emulator, since its been made for a NES pad

It was also ported to Armstrad & ZX spectrum PC's, twice to the Commodore 64 and a game boy color port

Wait, this is the MAME version of 720 right? Can't you just hit 'Tab' and try adjusting the x axis and y axis for that particular game? If memory serves me, that game didn't have a spinner at all but a joystick that rotated 360 degrees. Try changing those settings and see if that will help.

720 had this... http://www.720zone.com/720-Joystick-Help.html

Which was a rotary controller with an off-axis stick. It kinda works on the same principal as the ABS ring in a car, with the exception that it uses a optic PCB instead of a hall sensor.

I'll try the tab trick and see what that gets me.

I saw a hack somewhere where someone used a regular roller-ball mouse and mounted a stick to the ball to emulate a spinner. Pretty neat idea, but I'd rather not spend a day cutting up a mouse.
